Wild One-on-One with Don Nachbaur: Part One
Don Nachbaur begins his first season with the Wenatchee Wild this fall – we asked the club’s newest head coach a few questions, and we’ll introduce him one answer at a time…
Q1: What excited you about coming to Wenatchee and back to the Western Hockey League?
A1: A lot – I really enjoyed my time in pro (hockey), but this opportunity came up. I have a home in Washington and it brought me closer to family. I know this age group really well, and I enjoy coaching this age group. I think one of my strengths is as a teacher – I’ve helped produce a lot of guys, whether they’ve moved on in hockey or moved on in other walks of life, such as guys who went back to school…I had a guy who’s now an ER doctor, working in trauma. I’ve got other guys who went on to be police officers, four or five guys who worked for the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police), and I had a guy who works for the Winnipeg police.
I’m really proud of those guys whether they went on to a different walk of life after hockey – we taught them about discipline and hard work, and they’ve all gone on to successful careers and life, so it’s all good for me. I enjoy the age group, and coming back to Wenatchee, I get to do that all over again.
