T-Birds Dropped by Giants
Langley, B.C.. – The Seattle Thunderbirds lost to the Vancouver Giants, 4-1, Saturday at the Langley Events Centre, dropping their third straight game. The two teams travel back to Kent Tuesday for a third straight meeting. Game time at the accesso ShoWare Center is 7:05 p.m.
Vancouver scored on their very first shot of the night at 1:07 of the opening period. The T-Birds (2-3-0-0) got it back to even with a Brock England goal at the 13:20 mark, assisted by Noah Kosick and Antonio Martorana. It was England’s second goal in as many games. But with the period winding down the Giants popped in what turned out to be the game winner at 19:58.
Head coach Matt O’Dette said it’s been the same issues for the T-Birds in all three losses. “Game management is one that stands out,” he said. “We give up a goal a minute in and another in the last few seconds of the first.”
Vancouver scored again, just past the midway point of the second period, then added a power play goal late in the third as they beat the T-Birds for the second time this weekend.
“Just habits and details missing,” remarked O’Dette of the effort. “Our margins right now aren’t very big and we’re ending up on the wrong side of the results.” Of the stagnant offense he said they need to create their own puck luck. “A guy goes to the net, maybe one goes off his pants. We need those second and third chance opportunities. Right now we’re not greasy enough. We’re not willing enough to take punishment to put ourselves in those scoring situations.”
O’Dette said five games in is too early in the season to panic. “We have a good group of guys,” he explained. “Guys who care about the team. We’re gonna stick together. We’re disappointed that the effort in these last few games is not up to our standards but we’re gonna learn from it, grow from it. Sometimes, adversity, if you handle it the right way, can be beneficial.”
T-BIRDS EXTRAS
With his assist on England’s first period goal, Kosick extended his point streak to start the season to five games. He leads the team with seven points on four goals and three assists.
Grayson Tash was held off the scoresheet and saw his point streak snapped at four games.
Tuesday’s home game begins a three game homestand for the T-Birds.
