Simpson Makes NHL Debut with Chicago
EVERETT – Former Everett Silvertips goaltender Kent Simpson made his National Hockey League debut with the Chicago Blackhawks Saturday night, playing the third period of a game in Toronto against the Maple Leafs. Simpson becomes the third former Silvertip to appear in an NHL game this season and tenth Silvertip alumnus to suit up at the game’s highest level.
A second-round draft pick (58th overall) of the Blackhawks in 2010, Simpson turned pro as a 20-year-old last year. After starting his second professional season with the Rockford IceHogs, Chicago’s top American Hockey League affiliate, he earned his first NHL call-up last week following an injury to starting netminder Corey Crawford.
With the Blackhawks trailing 5-2 after two periods Saturday night at the Air Canada Centre, Simpson replaced Antti Raanta in goal for the third period. He stopped five of seven shots in the last 20 minutes as Chicago fell 7-3. In 15 AHL games with Rockford this season, the Edmonton, Alberta native has posted a 6-7 record to go with a .900 saves percentage and a 3.38 goals-against average.
In four years with the Silvertips from 2008-2012, Simpson became the second-winningest goalie in franchise history. He also ranks among the top three in shutouts and games played during his Everett tenure.
