Murray Invited to Canada’s WJC Summer Development Camp
Hockey Canada announced Friday that defenseman
Ryan Murray has been invited to its World Junior Summer Development Camp, taking place in Edmonton and Fort McMurray, AB from August 2 – 8. The camp is the first step in the selection process for Canada’s World Junior Championships team.
Murray will attempt to earn a spot on the Canadian National Junior Team after being a late cut at last year’s World Junior Championships tryout camp in December as a 17-year old. He served as Team Captain of Hockey Canada’s 2011 U-18 team, leading the club to a fourth place finish, and also captained Canada’s 2010 Summer U-18 team that won the gold medal at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament. Further international experience includes the 2010 World U-17 Hockey Challenge and the 2010 World U-18 Championships.
In 70 games with the Silvertips in 2010-11, the second year player recorded 46 points (6-40-46), along with 45 penalty minutes and a +18 rating. Over his final 36 games of the season, Murray was nearly a point-a-game contributor, tallying 33 points (4-29-33). In 122 career games for the Silvertips, Murray has recorded 73 points (11-62-73) and is Everett’s all-time plus-minus leader with a +51 rating. The 6’0, 185 pound defenseman out of White City, Saskatchewan, was Everett’s first round selection (ninth overall) in the 2008 WHL Bantam Draft and is not draft eligible until 2012. He was named as the 2011-12 Team Captain of the Everett Silvertips in April.
A total of 46 players were invited to the camp, all of whom were born in 1992 or 1993. The camp roster includes four goaltenders, 16 defensemen and 26 forwards. 22 players from the OHL, 13 players from the WHL, nine players from the QMJHL and two NCAA-based players were invited.
“Canada has many very talented players across the country in this age group, and the players should be very proud to have an opportunity to showcase their abilities at this camp in Edmonton,” Hockey Canada’s Head Scout, Kevin Prendergast said. “We are looking forward to a competitive, high-energy camp.”
Canada’s National Junior Team will be coached by Don Hay, the Head Coach of the WHL’s Vancouver Giants. Serving as assistants will be George Burnett (Belleville / OHL), Ryan Huska (Kelowna / WHL), and Pascal Vincent (Montreal / QMJHL). The 2012 IIHF World Junior Championships will be held from December 26 – January 5 in Calgary and Edmonton.
The Everett Silvertips begin their ninth season in the Western Hockey League in September, 2011.
