REBELS DOUSE BLAZERS – John Persson tallied a goal and two assists to lead the visiting Red Deer Rebels to a 5-3 win over the Kamloops Blazers in Western Hockey League action on Friday night.
Turner Elson – with a goal and an assist – Cory Millette, Daulton Siwak and Adam Kambeitz also scored and Alex Petrovic picked up two assists for the Rebels (13-4-0-1), who win their fifth straight game and move into a tie with Kootenay for second place in the Central Division. Patrik Bartosak made 24 saves to record his 13th win of the season.
Logan McVeigh, Colin Smith and Ryan Hanes scored for the Blazers (12-6-0-0), who went into the third period tied at 2-2 but were outscored 3-1 in the final frame to suffer their second straight loss. Cole Cheveldave made 18 saves in the defeat.
WHEAT KINGS 4, BRONCOS 1
Mark Stone and Ryley Miller each notched a goal and an assist to lead the Brandon Wheat Kings to a 4-1 win over the visiting Swift Current Broncos on Friday.
Dominick Favreau and Paul Ciarelli also scored for the Wheat Kings (13-6-1-1), who scored the game’s first four goals en route to their second win in a row. Corbin Boes made 25 saves to record his eighth win of the season.
Shea Howorko – with his first goal of the season – had the lone marker for the Broncos (7-11-2-1), who see their losing skid hit three games and remain in fifth place in the East Division. Jon Groenheyde and Austin Smith combined for 46 saves in the loss.
WARRIORS 3, PATS 2 O/T
Quinton Howden scored his second overtime game-winner of the season as the Moose Jaw Warriors edged the visiting Regina Pats 3-2 on Friday.
Justin Kirsch and Dylan McIlrath also scored for the Warriors (13-5-1-0), who sweep their home-and-home series versus Regina while pushing their win streak to seven games. Luke Siemens made 25 saves to claim the victory.
Brandon Davidson tallied a goal and an assist and Matt Marantz also scored for the Pats (12-8-1-0), who tied the game at 2-2 with two goals in a 1:47 span late in the third period but fell in overtime. Matt Hewitt made 25 saves in the loss.
THUNDERBIRDS 5, HITMEN 4
Justin Hickman scored two goals, including the game-winner, to lead the visiting Seattle Thunderbirds to a 5-4 win over the Calgary Hitmen on Friday.
Burke Gallimore and Marcel Noebels each notched a goal and an assist while Connor Sanvido also scored for the Thunderbirds (7-10-0-0), who earn their second straight victory on their Central Division road trip. Calvin Pickard made 23 saves to post the win.
Alex Gogolev tallied a goal and two assists while Danny Gayle, Alex Roach and Brady Brassart also scored for the Hitmen (8-9-1-1), who went 1-for-5 on the power play in the setback. Chris Driedger and Brandon Glover combined for 22 saves in the loss.
AMERICANS 4, TIGERS 3 S/O
Justin Feser scored the winner in a shootout to lift the visiting Tri-City Americans to a 4-3 triumph over the Medicine Hat Tigers on Friday.
Patrick Holland, Malte Stromwall and Mason Wilgosh scored in regulation for the Americans (14-5-0-0), who were 2-for-3 on the power play as they claim their fourth straight victory. Ty Rimmer made 25 saves through regulation play, and denied three of four Tigers’ shootout attempts to claim the win.
Curtis Valk scored twice and Hunter Shinkaruk scored his 21st goal of the season for the Tigers (14-5-1-1), who fall to 4-0-1-1 over their last six games and remain in first place in the overall WHL standings. Tyler Bunz made 30 saves in regulation, but was beaten twice in the shootout to suffer the loss.
WINTERHAWKS 6, CHIEFS 5 S/O
Taylor Leier scored the deciding goal in a shootout to lift the Portland Winterhawks to a 6-5 win over the visiting Spokane Chiefs on Friday.
Ty Rattie and Brad Ross each scored twice while Taylor Peters also scored in regulation play for the Winterhawks (12-7-1-1), who earn their fourth straight victory, while Sven Bartschi chipped in three assists. Mac Carruth made 32 saves in regulation, and prevailed in the shootout to record his 11th win of the season.
Mike Aviani, Marek Kalus, Steve Kuhn, Darren Kramer and Connor Chartier scored in regulation for the Chiefs (9-4-0-2), who led 5-4 until Ross tied the game in the final minute of the third period. Mac Engel made 35 saves through regulation play, but was beaten four times in the shootout to take the loss.
ROCKETS 2, OIL KINGS 1 S/O
Zach Franko scored in the eighth round of a shootout to lift the Kelowna Rockets to a 2-1 win over the visiting Edmonton Oil Kings on Friday.
Colton Sissons scored in regulation for the Rockets (6-11-1-1), who snap a five-game losing skid. Jordon Cooke turned in a 26-save effort through regulation and overtime, and denied six of eight Oil Kings’ shootout attempts to record the win.
Kristians Pelss scored the lone marker for the Oil Kings (11-6-1-2), who drop their second straight decision on their B.C. Division road trip. Laurent Brossoit made 23 saves in regulation, but was beaten three times in the shootout to absorb the loss.
COUGARS 4, SILVERTIPS 1
Spencer Asuchak scored twice to pace the visiting Prince George Cougars to a 4-1 win over the Everett Silvertips on Friday.
Cody Carlson and Martin Marincin also scored for the Cougars (6-12-0-1), who scored the game’s first three goals en route to their second win in a row. Drew Owsley made 18 saves to claim the victory.
Austin Adam – with his first WHL marker – scored the only goal for the Silvertips (4-14-0-3), who see their losing skid hit six games. Kent Simpson made 27 saves in the setback.
