ALUMNI NEWS: Pilon, Sutter capture Calder Cup with Hershey Bears
Former Everett Silvertips Garrett Pilon and Riley Sutter secured their first Calder Cup championship Wednedsay night, as the Hershey Bears defeated the Coachella Valley Firebirds 3-2 in overtime of Game 7.
Pilon, 25, was acquired by the Everett Silvertips via trade from the Kamloops Blazers at the 2018 trade deadline. He ended the year with 16 goals and 20 assists over 30 games with the Tips, with an additional 11 goals and 18 assists in 22 playoff games. Pilon was drafted by the Washington Capitals 87th-overall in the third round of the 2016 NHL Draft.
Sutter, 23, played four seasons with the Silvertips after being selected in the sixth round of the 2014 WHL Draft. Over the course of his junior hockey career, Sutter racked up 60 goals and 77 assists in 204 career regular season appearances. He was also instrumental as a teammate of Pilon’s in Everett’s 2018 run to the WHL Final, recording nine goals and 10 assists in 21 playoff games that year. Sutter was drafted by the Washington Capitals with the 93rd-overall pick in the third round of the 2018 NHL Draft.
Pilon and Sutter become the third and fourth Silvertips alumni to hoist the American Hockey League’s Calder Cup, joining Radko Gudas (2012, Norfolk Admirals) and Landon Ferraro (2013, Grand Rapids Griffins). Both players recorded an overtime winner in the series, with Sutter netting one in Game 3 and Pilon notching his in Game 5.
