Victoria, BC – The Victoria Royals are proud to announce that centre Logan Nelson was selected by the Buffalo Sabres in the fifth round with the 133rd overall pick today at the 2012 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The Rogers, MN native becomes the second Victoria Royals’ player to be drafted to the NHL. Fresh off his WHL rookie season that saw the centre notch 62 points (24G-39A) over 71 games, Nelson was the 23rd player drafted from the Western Hockey League (WHL) and the 33rd U.S.-born skater selected. His 62 points last season landed the 18-year-old third in team scoring as well as fourth in scoring amongst WHL rookie skaters before going on to record four assists in four games during the 2012 WHL Playoffs.
“This is just a special day for my family and me,” Nelson said. “To see the emotion and reactions on the faces of families and friends when I was chosen is a moment I’ll never forget. The Buffalo Sabres are a first class organization and I am excited to be a part of their program.”
The 6’1, 178 lb forward joins the Sabres’ organization after becoming the first Royals’ player to earn an invitation to the NHL Scouting Combine earlier this month. Recently, Nelson also garnered an invite to the 2012 United States National Junior Evaluation Camp set to run from August 4-11 in Lake Placid, New York.
Nelson, who signed with Victoria on August 27, 2011, played one season with the Des Moines Buccaneers of the USHL where he tallied six goals and three assists over 41 games played before joining the Royals.
