SUNDAY’S WHL PLAYOFF ROUND-UP
HAWKS EVEN UP SERIES WITH WIN OVER CHIEFS – Ryan Johansen scored the go-ahead goal on a power play 7:38 into the second period to lead the Portland Winterhawks to a 2-1 triumph over the visiting Spokane Chiefs in Game 2 of the Kal Tire WHL Western Conference Championship series in WHL playoff action on Sunday.
William Wrenn – with his first of the post-season – also scored for the Winterhawks, who were 1-for-3 on the power play as the tie up the best-of-seven series at a game apiece. Mac Carruth turned aside 34 of 35 shots he faced to backstop the Hawks to the victory.
Matt Marantz opened the scoring in the game with his third playoff goal for the Chiefs, who suffer just their second loss through seven games on enemy ice in the post-season. James Reid turned in a 34-save effort in a losing cause.
The Chiefs will host the Winterhawks for Games 3 and 4 of the best-of-seven series on Wednesday and Friday in Spokane, WA.
