Billet Spotlight: Carley & Jeff Joyce
As the Kelowna Rockets prepare to host the 2026 Memorial Cup, one of the most vital roles behind the scenes becomes even more important: our billet families. These households provide more than just a place to stay; they offer mentorship, structure, and a sense of belonging that stays with players for life.
Few understand that better than Carley and Jeff Joyce, who are entering their ninth year as billets with the Rockets.
Why They Billet
The Joyces had considered opening their home for years, but it was a local news article and a personal connection that pushed them to take the leap.
“Around the same time, our nephews were at a point in their hockey journeys where they needed to billet with families in other communities. We saw firsthand how meaningful those relationships were to them, and we wanted to offer that same kind of support and care to someone else.”
Since then, they’ve never looked back.
What Makes It Worthwhile
For the Joyces, the true reward lies in the relationships formed not just with the players, but with their families, teammates, and fellow billets.
“It’s been a privilege to support young athletes as they chase their dreams of playing pro hockey. We’ve built lifelong relationships with our billet players and their families.”
Whether it’s a post-game phone call, a holiday greeting, or a surprise visit in the off-season, those connections endure long after the hockey season ends.
Creating a True Home Environment
Inside their home, the Joyces foster structure, independence, and comfort. Their players help with chores, prepare meals, and participate in regular family dinners a time the Joyces treasure.
“Dinner time is where the magic happens. We sit down together most nights and catch up on everything from the highs and lows of the day to silly stories.”
Carley, a local teacher, brings a unique tradition to the table: the daily “question of the day” she uses in her classroom. Her billet players look forward to answering, knowing their responses will be shared with a group of eager Grade 3 students the next day.
Moments That Matter
Some of the most powerful memories aren’t grand gestures but quiet, meaningful moments.
“It’s those times when a player sits at the kitchen island and slowly opens up about something weighing on them. That’s when you know you’re providing more than just a place to stay; you’re offering a home away from home.”
Even inside jokes and post-game banter take on special meaning. Over the years, their home has been filled with laughs, kitchen catchphrases, and a surprising number of “Rise and Grind” coffee mugs, all from bonds built through hockey.
The Long-Term Impact
The Joyces remain in close contact with nearly every player they’ve billeted. Many have gone on to play professionally or pursue education, but all remain part of the family.
“Whenever they’re back in town, they stop in for dinner or a quick visit. It’s like having family come home.”
That sentiment is visible in Jeff’s office, where a wall of former billet photos serves as a daily reminder of the young lives they’ve helped shape.
Their Message to Future Billets
For those considering billeting, the Joyces offer a message that’s both simple and sincere:
“Open your home, open your heart, and you’ll gain more than you ever could have imagined. Hockey might be the reason these players come to you, but family is the reason they stay in your heart long after they’ve moved on.”
“If you’re on the fence, all we can say is just do it. You won’t regret it.”
With the Memorial Cup returning to Kelowna this season, there has never been a better time to get involved. The experience of becoming a billet is deeply rewarding and truly unforgettable.
