Comeback Complete
The Rebels will head into the holiday break on a positive note after coming back to defeat the Ice from Cranbrook 6-4 Saturday Night.
In a first period the Rebels would like to forget, the Ice took advantage of 8 Rebel minor penalties (including 3 5-on-3’s), and built a 4-1 lead after one period of play. Drew Czerwonka (2) and Matt Fraser (2) connected for Kootenay, while Brett Ferguson would get one back for Red Deer. The home team trailed 3-0 and 4-1 during the first period.
In the second period, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins would stuff a puck into a gaping net on the powerplay to make it 4-2, and John Persson deflected a Ferguson wrist shot a minute and a half later to close the gap to 4-3.
Locke Muller would get his first goal in the WHL 8:52 into the third, tying the hockey game. Finally, on a 2 on 1, John Persson would make a move around goalie Nathan Lieuwen, and slid one in front of the net to a charging Josh Cowen, who tapped in the game winning goal. Nugent-Hopkins burried an empty-netter with 1:06 remaining, making the final score 6-4 for Red Deer.
After a weeklong break, the Rebels will take on the Brandon Wheat Kings on December 28 at the Enmax Centrium (7pm), followed 2 nights later by a home date with the Lethbridge Hurricanes.
