Rebels suffer matinee loss to Edmonton
The Edmonton Oil Kings and Red Deer Rebels faced off for the second time in eight days Sunday, and unfortunately for Red Deer, the final score remained the same, 5-1 in favour of the Oil Kings.
Red Deer outshot Edmonton in this Kids Day Matinee in front of 4,040 fans at the Peavey Mart Centrium but couldn’t solve Edmonton netminder Alex Worthington but once. Special teams woes for the Rebels once again loomed large in this one.
STATS STORY
Gracyn Sawchyn (EDM) – 2 goals, 1 assist
Alex Worthington (EDM) – 41 saves
Luke Vlooswyk (RD) – 1 goal
HOW IT HAPPENED
Edmonton broke open a scoreless game with two goals late in the first period. Gracyn Sawchyn (power play) and Jack Toogood scored 1:15 apart for a 2-0 Oil Kings lead through 20.
The visitors add another just 47 second into period two as Sawchyn caught the Rebels flat-footed and tucked home his second of the game past Rebels netminder Rhett Stoesser.
Roan Woodward charged the net and banged home a pass from Lukas Sawchyn late in the middle frame for a four-goal Edmonton lead.
Luke Vlooswyk game the home fans something to cheer about when his shot from the slot got home for his first goal of the season early in the third period.

Worthington later denied Samuel Drancak on a penalty shot to maintain Edmonton’s three-goal lead.
Miroslav Holinka added a late power play tally, Edmonton’s third of the game, past Chase Wutzke, who took over for Stoesser for the final frame, for a 5-1 final score.
Red Deer outshot Edmonton 43-38 but were 0-for-3 on the power play while the Oil Kings were 3-for-5.

WHAT THEY SAID
“We just generated 43 shots, but we only scored one goal, that’s the unfortunate side,” Rebels coach Dave Struch said about his team’s effort level.
“Penalties hurts us. Our compete for 60 minutes tonight was great.
“It gives us lots to work off of and something to word toward on a big game Friday night next week.”
Struch added, “We need more guys getting to the net. We were pounding pucks to the net all night but the second opportunities weren’t there. We have to get there, engage in there, and stay in it. That’s the message to the guys and we’ll work on it this week.”
