WHL Cup semifinals set following round-robin play
The WHL Cup semifinals are set following a hectic round-robin portion of the tournament featuring the top 2008-born players in western Canada.
Alberta nailed down first place in round robin play at the Peavey Mart Centrium Friday with an 8-2 rout of BC, getting two-goal efforts from Ben MacBeath and Ty Meunier.
Owen Folstrom, Brett Olson, Patrick Sopiarz and Sawyer Dingman also scored for Alberta, which got a 24-save outing from netminder Ryley Budd.
Liam Ruck notched the lone goal for BC. Ashton Thornton made 20 saves and Micha Davidson stopped 19 shots for the losing team.
Earlier, Manitoba got third-period power play goals from Bret Liske and Luca Pura in a 4-3 win over Saskatchewan.
Also scoring for Manitoba were Carter Haney and Carson Carels. Cohen Klassen, Cohen Harris and Dayne Beuker replied for Saskatchewan.
Winning netminder Dylan McFadyen blocked 32 shots. Jackson Dunn made 25 saves at the other end.
Alberta finished round robin play with a 2-0-1-0 record and will face 1-2-0-0 Saskatchewan in today’s 1 p.m. semifinal, preceded by BC (2-1-0-0) versus Manitoba (1-2-0-0) at 10:15 a.m.
The bronze medal game is set for 10:15 a.m. Sunday, to be followed by the championship contest at 1 p.m.
