Raiders Drop Road Trip Opener to Hurricanes
Lethbridge, AB – The Prince Albert Raiders (2-4-0-0) had their chances, but were only able to solve Leif Oaten once as they dropped a 3-1 game to the Lethbridge Hurricanes (1-3-0-0) at VisitLethbridge.com Arena on Friday night.
Oaten was stellar between the pipes for the Hurricanes, making 26 saves to backstop Lethbridge to the win. Jonah Sivertson scored the lone goal in the loss for the Raiders.
The Raiders had the best two chances to open the scoring in the first period. Jordan Murray’s shot from the blueline beat Lief Oaten but not the post. Then, in the dying moments of the opening period, Riley Boychuk dished to Brandon Gorzynski on a short two-on-one rush. Gorzynski’s shot was denied by the shoulder of a sliding Oaten to keep the game scoreless after 20.
In the second, the Raiders had a mid-period power play that generated pressure on Oaten, but they couldn’t solve the netminder.
After the power play was cut short due to a Raiders penalty, the Hurricanes capitalized on their own chance with the man advantage. Logan Stuart worked a give-and-go with Easton Daneault in the right corner. Stuart buried the return feed to give Lethbridge a 1-0 lead.
Late in the second, the Raiders came inches from the equalizer. Murray’s shot from the point found iron again, this time the crossbar and the puck stayed out.
The Raiders upped the pressure in the third period looking to tie the game up. Eli Molde found a puck at the side of the net. He slid it under Oaten, but the puck found its way through the blue paint and out the other side.
Shortly after, Murray and Brock Cripps exchanged the puck at the top of the zone before Cripps left it for Evan Smith. The 20-year-old’s blast from the point beat Oaten but again hit the post.
Lethbridge extended their lead at the 8:35 mark of the third. Stuart’s wraparound attempt was denied by Steele Bass, but the rebound stayed in front of the net. Oliver Sichtar banged home the rebound to make it 2-0 for the Hurricanes.
Sivertson cut into the deficit in half with 7:56 to go in the third. The Vegas Golden Knights prospect took the rebound off a Darius Hordal at the left side of the net. He used a long stride behind the goal to get to the right post and jam the puck past Oaten for his first goal of the year.
The Raiders nearly drew even shortly after Sivertson’s goal. Benett Kelly’s one-timer from the slot hit a Hurricane in front of the goal and it nearly fooled Oaten, but the Hurricanes goaltender was able to snag the puck with his glove.
After the Raiders had a late power play expire, Dayne Beuker found the empty net from centre ice with 46 seconds to play to seal a 3-1 game for the Hurricanes.
Bass stopped 14 shots in the loss for the Raiders.
