GURR-REAT IDEA
March 28th, 1986 – The date of March 28th, 1986 might be the most important date in Lethbridge Hurricanes history, despite the Hurricanes not even being born yet. After ten years in the City of Lethbridge, the WHL club known as the Broncos, were rumoured to have been sold. That’s when Lethbridge resident Alf Gurr spawned the idea of buying a team as a Community. Gurr proposed the idea to his brother and friend, Joe Feller, and the lot approached Bob Bartlett about the idea. After persuading Bartlett, who was the City Manager at the time, he went to bat with Lethbridge City Council. After selling 1,860 one-hundred dollar shares for a total of $186,000.00, the City agreed to match that and the Community was awarded a WHL franchise, eventually purchasing the Calgary Wranglers. The date of March 28th, 1986 is important because it is the date in which a team was granted back to Lethbridge. That date is marked in infamy, as 328-1986 is the phone number of the Hurricanes office.
