FRIDAY’S WHL ROUND-UP
WARRIORS EDGE WHEAT KINGS – MacKenzie Royer scored on a power play with just nine seconds to play in the third period to lift the Moose Jaw Warriors to a 5-4 win over the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings in Western Hockey League action on Friday night.
Rookie Brayden Cuthbert scored his first WHL goal while Quinton Howden – with a goal and an assist – Collin Bowman and Cody Beach also scored for the Warriors (14-11-0-1), who scored three times on the power play. Thomas Heemskerk made 25 saves to record his 11th win of the season.
Mark Stone scored twice whole Michael Ferland and David Toews also counted for the Wheat Kings (11-16-1-1), who see their losing skid stretched to six games. Liam Liston made 26 saves in the defeat.
BRONCOS 4, HURRICANES 2
Brad Hoban broke a 2-2 tie with his 12th goal of the season late in the third period as the Swift Current Broncos went on to a 4-2 win over the visiting Lethbridge Hurricanes on Friday.
Graeme Craig – with his first WHL marker – Jordan Peddle and Adam Lowry also scored while Cody Eakin picked up two assists for the Broncos (14-14-0-0), who outshot the visitors 48-19 as they post their second straight victory. Mark Friesen made 17 stops in the win.
Mitch Maxwell and Austin Fyten scored for the Hurricanes (10-11-1-3), who were outshot 36-11 over the final two periods of play. Dylan Tait turned in a 44-save performance in a losing cause.
RAIDERS 3, BLADES 1
Brandon Herrod scored his 10th and 11th goals of the season to lead the Prince Albert Raiders to a 3-1 victory over the visiting Saskatoon Blades on Friday.
Jonathan Parker – with his 16th goal of the season – also scored for the Raiders (9-14-2-2), who earn their second straight victory and first of the season versus the Blades. Eric Williams turned in a 28-save performance to record the victory.
Lukas Sutter scored his first WHL goal for the Blades (17-6-0-1), who see a four-game winning streak come to an end. Adam Morrison made 29 saves in the defeat.
REBELS 4, HITMEN 3
Adam Kambeitz scored with just two seconds left on the clock to lift the visiting Red Deer Rebels to a 4-3 win over the Calgary Hitmen on Friday.
Andrej Kudrna, Turner Elson and Mathew Dumba – with his seventh goal of the season – also scored for the Rebels (17-7-1-2), who move two points ahead of Saskatoon for first place in the Eastern Conference. Darcy Kuemper made 12 saves to claim his 17th victory of the season.
Kris Foucault scored twice and Cody Sylvester also scored for the Hitmen (6-18-1-0), who tied the game at 3-3 on the power play with under three minutes remaining in the third period only to give up the winner in the dying seconds of the game. Juraj Holly made 21 saves in the loss.
OIL KINGS 6, GIANTS 4
Josh Lazowski scored two goals, including the game-winner, as the Edmonton Oil Kings struck twice in a 43-second span late in the third period to post a 6-4 win over the visiting Vancouver Giants on Friday.
Jordan Hickmott – with his 10th of the season – Griffin Reinhart, Travis Ewanyk and T.J. Foster also scored for the Oil Kings (10-14-0-1), who record their second straight victory at home. Jon Groenheyde made 18 saves to claim the victory.
Brendan Gallagher notched two goals and an assist while Jordan Martinook and Craig Cunningham also scored for the Giants (13-9-1-2), who were scoreless on four power play chances in the contest. Brendan Jensen made 26 saves in the defeat.
BLAZERS 4, CHIEFS 3 S/O
Brendan Ranford and Austin Madaisky scored in a shootout to lift the Kamloops Blazers to a 4-3 victory over the visiting Spokane Chiefs on Friday.
Jordan DePape scored twice and set up another while Dylan Willick also scored for the Blazers (13-12-0-1), who exact revenge on the Chiefs after Wednesday’s 10-1 thrashing in Spokane. Cam Lanigan turned in a 41-save performance through regulation and overtime, and wasn’t beaten in the shootout to claim the victory.
Tyler Johnson scored twice and added an assist while Jared Cowen scored his fourth goal in two games for the Chiefs (12-9-1-2), who led 3-2 until the Blazers tied the game up at the 18:40 mark of the third period. Mac Engel made 16 saves in just over 35 minutes of work in regulation and overtime after replacing starter James Reid, but was beaten twice in the shootout to take the loss.
COUGARS 5, PATS 3
16-year-old rookie Troy Bourke scored his first career hat trick to pace the Prince George Cougars to a 5-3 win over the visiting Regina Pats on Friday.
Brett Connolly – with his 19th of the season – and Greg Fraser also scored for the Cougars (13-10-2-0), who earn their second straight victory and now sit just one point behind Vancouver for first place in the B.C. Division. James Priestner made 32 saves in the win.
Myles Bell, Jordan Weal and Mikael Jung scored for the Pats (7-15-4-1), who trailed 5-0 after the second period en route to their third straight loss. Damien Ketlo made 29 saves in the defeat.
AMERICANS 4, ICE 0
Drew Owsley turned in a 35-save performance to record his second shutout of the season as the Tri-City Americans blanked the visiting Kootenay Ice 4-0 on Friday.
Brendan Shinnimin scored twice while Justin Feser and Brooks Macek also counted for the Americans (14-9-1-1), who have won two straight and three of their last four games.
Nathan Lieuwen made 32 saves in a losing cause for the Ice (16-7-0-2), who suffer their second straight shutout defeat and fall three points back of Red Deer for top spot in the Central Division.
BRUINS 7, WINTERHAWKS 2
Kevin Sundher scored twice and set up two more for a four-point effort to lead the Chilliwack Bruins to a 7-2 victory over the visiting Portland Winterhawks on Friday.
Ryan Howse notched a goal and an assist while Brandon Manning, Jeff Einhorn, Steve Oursov and Brandon Magee also scored for the Bruins (12-9-2-1), who trailed 2-0 early in the second period but scored seven unanswered goals to post the win. Lucas Gore made 30 saves in the victory.
Nino Niederreiter and Sven Bartschi scored for the Winterhawks (21-5-0-1), who suffer their second setback in their last three games. Mac Carruth made 30 saves in the defeat.
THUNDERBIRDS 4, SILVERTIPS 1
Burke Gallimore scored twice to pace the visiting Seattle Thunderbirds to a 4-1 win over the Everett Silvertips on Friday.
Mitch Elliot and Marcel Noebels also scored for the Thunderbirds (11-5-3-4), who were scoreless on four power play chances in the contest. Calvin Pickard turned aside 30 of 31 shots to record his 50th career victory.
Ryan Murray scored the only goal for the Silvertips (11-10-1-3), who drop their second straight decision, while Kent Simpson made 21 saves in the loss.
