Canes spoil the party… Again.
Medicine Hat, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes are 2-0 after spoiling another home opener for the second time in as many nights with a 3-1 win in Medicine Hat.The Canes got off to a slow start once again as they found themselves being out shot 18-5 in the first period alone but Lethbridge local Dylan Tait, perhaps channeling a little of last night’s impressive performance by Brandon Anderson stood tall in the first frame stopping all 18 shots sent his way.
The man with the hot hand – Austin Fyten was at it again notching the Hurricanes lone first period goal to put the Canes up 1-0 going into the second. The goal came with just over a minute to play in the period and was Fyten’s 4th of the year after notching a hat trick on Friday night in Calgary. For the second night in a row the Canes turned it up in the second period, taking advantage of their speed in the neutral zone as Swedish forward Jacob Berglund caught his defenseman pinching and broke in on a partial breakaway – made a nice forehand backhand move while being tripped and roofed the Canes second unanswered goal of the night. just seconds later Mitch Maxwell made a nice move to tally his first of the season and give the Canes a 3-0 lead – which they would carry into the third period.
Tait continued his excellent play in the third and remained flawless until Medicine Hat’s 31st shot of the game to make it 3-1. Tait would then show his resiliency down the home stretch as he would put the exclamation point on his 37 save first star performance with 13 stops in the final frame alone.
The Hurricanes finish the first weekend of the season with a 2-0-0-0 record and wins against the defending WHL Champions in Calgary and their highly regarded rivals in Medicine Hat. Lethbridge currently sits tied with the Red Deer Rebels for first place in the Central Division.
The team will practice at home this week and will be back in action on the road again Friday night as they take on the Seattle Thunderbirds in the 3rd of their 5 games away from home to start the year.
