Canes lose 5-3 to Blades
Lethbridge, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes came away empty handed this weekend as they fell 5-3 to the Saskatoon Blades on Saturday night in Lethbridge. The Canes came out strong against one of the East division’s best as rookie Alex Kuvaev forced a turnover and put away a pretty goal on the breakaway to notch his team leading tenth of the season. Kuvaev remains in sole possession of second place in the WHL rookie goal scoring race – his 16 points lead all Lethbridge players and tie him for fifth in the WHL rookie point scoring race.
Kuvaev’s roommate Austin Fyten once again made an impact just minutes later – in only his second game since returning from a foot injury as he carried the puck out of the corner and shoveled his 7th of the season through the five hole of the Saskatoon goaltender to give the Canes a 2-0 lead. The goal gives Fyten a team leading 1.43 pts per game average as he has ten points (7G,3A) in just 7 games played this season.
But the Canes would struggle to hold a lead as Saskatoon tied the game 2-2 entering the third and final period. The Blades would pour it on as some inopportune penalty calls for the Canes proved to be their downfall as the Blades pulled away and left the Canes forced to kill five third period power plays. Mark Reners managed to score his fifth of the year late in the period but the Blades would pull out a 5-3 win.
On a brighter note the Hurricanes 2nd Annual Pink in the Rink Event came to a close on Saturday night with all the proceeds being raised for the Run for the Cure/Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. The Hurricanes would like to sincerely thank event sponsors: Classic Hits CJOC 94.1 FM, Arctic Spa, Blocks and Rocks, Logomotives Group, Prim Health and Beauty, Ward Brothers Construction and ENMAX Energy as well as all the volunteers and fans who helped make this event a success for the second straight season.
