Canes lose 4-3 in P.A.

Prince Albert, SK – A pair of third period goals weren’t enough as the Canes fought back from a 4-1 deficit but came up just a little short as they fell 4-3 to the Prince Albert Raiders in P.A. on Friday night. Both teams battled to a scoreless first period as the Raiders leaned on their goaltender but were able to keep the Hurricanes off the board despite being out played and out shot 11-7 in this key matchup. The Raiders would come out flying in the second however putting up three goals in a span of 6:47 to take a 3-0 lead. The Canes would then finally notch their first of the night just 10 seconds later as Mitch Maxwell continued to show success on a line with his brother Russ as the two hooked up for Mitch’s 15th of the season to make it 3-1. But untimely penalties would cost the Canes once again as they would give up a late second period power play goal to make the score 4-1.

Goaltender Brandon Anderson would be replaced at the period break by Dylan Tait as the Canes played desperation hockey in the third. Reid Jackson notched his third of the season to extend his goal scoring streak to three and pull the Canes to within two just a minute into the final frame – Jackson has three goals and two assists in his last four games. The Maxwell Boys would strike again with just under 12 minutes to play as Russ Maxwell would tally his 7th of the season. Mitch Maxwell and Jackson would both tally assists on the play as the Maxwells (Mitch – 7 pts. (3G,4A); Russ – 6 pts. (1G,5A)) have totalled 13 points in the last four games. The Canes would continue to press as Tait made 12 saves without allowing a goal but the comeback would be halted as the Raiders pulled out the 4-3 win. The Canes were outshot 39-36 on the night and the power play struggled going 0 for 4 while the penalty kill was only able to hold the Raiders to 2 for 5 on the night.

The Canes will have to recover quick as the road doesn’t get any easier tomorrow night as they take on the number one team in the WHL – the Saskatoon Blades in Saskatoon Saturday. This game will be the Canes fourth and final game against the Blades in the 10-11 regular season with a record of 0-2-0-1 vs. Saskatoon. In their last meeting on Nov.22/10 in Lethbridge inopportune penalty calls for the Canes proved to be their downfall the Canes were forced to kill five third period power plays en route to a 5-3 loss in a game which was tied 2-2 after the second period.
