Hitmen Fall to to Tigers in Home Opener
The Calgary Hitmen opened their 29th season in the Western Hockey League tonight at home vs the Medicine Hat Tigers.
Two shorthanded goals and a penalty shot were the difference makers in the 4-1 loss to Medicine Hat. The first period would remain scoreless despite multiple power play opportunities for both sides.
Brayden Boehm would open the game the scoring for Medicine Hat just under two minutes into the second period. His marker would be followed up by goals from Tyler MacKenzie and Shane Smith putting Medicine Hat up 3-0 heading into the final frame.
Calgary would finally crack the scoreboard courtesy of Ben Kindel, scoring his first WHL goal. Sawyer Mayes would record his first WHL point with the assist. A penalty shot would seal the deal for Medicine Hat, with Tyler Mackenzie scoring his second of the game.
Shots finished up 37-36 in favour of Medicine Hat. Ethan Buenaventura made 33 saves in tonight’s contest. The team now heads on the road to Medicine Hat to finish the home-and-home set with the Tigers.
