Giants Rebound WIth A Convincing WIn Over Chilliwack
The Vancouver Giants scored 4 first period goals en route to a 5-1 victory over the Chilliwack Bruins Saturday night at Prospera Centre in Chilliwack. With the win Don Hay tied Pat Ginnell for 3rd on the all time win list with 518 victories as a head coach in the Western Hockey League.
After a disappointing loss last night on home ice against the Bruins, the Giants were seeking a little redemption in Chilliwack and they proved they meant business early on. Nathan Burns scored his 13th of the year 2:29 in. Spencer Bennett made it 2-0, potting his 30th of the year just over 5 minutes later. Vancouver wasn’t done there, Brendan Gallagher banged home a rebound for his team leading 40th of the season and the Giants was in full control 3-0. That would be the end of the night for Lucas Gore in net for Chilliwack. He gave up 3 goals on 10 shots and was replaced by Braden Gamble. That didn’t matter, as Vancouver would add one more before the period was out; on the power play, Gallagher picked up his 2nd of the game and 41st of the year to give the Giants a 4-0 lead after 20 minutes.
Just one goal in the second period and it came on a Chilliwack power play as Brandon Manning beat Brendan Jensen. The Giants netminder was making his first start since January 15th and his team led 4-1 through 2 periods.
Vancouver would add one more in the third period courtesy of Michael Burns. He scored his 13th of the season on the power play to make it a 5-1 final. The Giants outshot the Bruins 37-17. Jensen made 16 saves for his 8th win of the season. Brendan Gallagher finished with 3 points and now has a team leading 83 points on the year.
The Giants wrap up their weekend tomorrow night on home ice vs. the Tri-City Americans. Game time is 5:00pm at the Pacific Coliseum. The pregame show begins at 4:30pm on AM 650.
