Giants Come From Behind to Beat Royals
Tyler Benson scored the winning goal at 12:25 of the third period as the Vancouver Giants came from behind to defeat the Victoria Royals 5-3 at the Pacific Coliseum on Sunday evening. Vladimir Bobylev, Carter Popoff, Alec Baer and Thomas Foster also scored in the victory as the G-Men improved to 3-0 on the season for the first time since 2007.
The Royals struck early when Jared Dmitriw scored on a deflection just 32 seconds into the first period to put the visitors ahead. Austin Carroll made it 2-0 for Victoria early in the second, but the Giants pulled to within one goal later in the period after Bobylev tipped a Clayton Kirichenko point shot past Royals goalie Coleman Vollrath for his second goal in as many games. Popoff notched a power play marker just a few minutes later to tie the game, but Victoria retook the lead in the final minute of the stanza when Tyler Soy scored on a five-on-three power play.
The Giants would storm back with three goals in the third period to claim the win. Baer netted his first of the season to tie the game with a shot from the left circle before Benson scored the eventual winner, banking the puck off the skate of a Victoria defender from the left boards. Foster added an empty netter to lock-up the victory.
The G-Men will now head out on the road for their first away game of the season on Wednesday night against the Kelowna Rockets. Fans can listen to the game on TSN 1410 radio or TSN1410.ca. The Pre-Game Show gets underway at 6:00pm, followed by the face-off at 7:00pm. Vancouver’s next home game will be on Friday, October 3rd when the Swift Current Broncos come to the Coliseum for the only meeting of the season between the two teams.
