Blades new netminder arrives in Saskatoon
Saskatoon, SK – Newly acquired goaltender Ryan Kubic arrived in Saskatoon for his first practice with the Blades on Wednesday.
Despite being only 19 years old, Kubic brings with him the veteran experience and leadership of an overage player, having played in 109 WHL games dating back to the 2013-14 season. Kubic was originally drafted by the Vancouver Giants in the second round of the 2013 WHL Bantam draft and has spent his entire WHL career there.
“I was a little bit shocked, it was surprise for me but now being here with the guys it’s a great atmosphere,” said Kubic prior to hitting the ice for his first practice in the Bridge City.
“It’s definitely an honour when a team wants you to be their guy,” said Kubic when asked about stepping into the starters role.
Kubic leaves the Giants with a number of accolades, including holding the franchise’s shutout streak record (3 games), Giants’ Rookie of the Year in 2015-16 and Giants’ Unsung Hero Award, Players Choice Award and Three Stars Award in 2016-17. Furthermore, in the 2016-17 season he set a franchise record in saves made in a single season at 1681.
Kubic is expected to assume to the starting role from the departing Logan Flodell.
