Blades stop in for shinny with forest fire evacuees
Saskatoon, SK – The Saskatoon Blades had a late addition to their 2017 pre-season schedule on Saturday, making a stop a the Henk Ruys Soccer Centre in Saskatoon to extinguish boredom for residents of Pelican Narrows that were evacuated from their homes due to forest fires last week.
Armed with sticks, balls, nets, and smiles the Blades went head to head in a wild two-ball game ending in a controversial 115-115 tie, after which both teams filed protests.
After the fun, the kids took the players on a tour of their temporary home in the soccer centre. People with the City of Saskatoon, Red Cross, Salvation Army and other groups are doing an amazing job making the Centre feel like home – as much as possible – for about 600 people forced from their homes up north by forest fires. Many more are in hotels around the city.
The Blades wish the firefighters in the north safe success extinguishing the flames so our new-found friends can get back to their homes!
The Saskatoon Blades open the 2017-18 WHL regular season at home on Friday, September 22nd versus the Swift Current Broncos. Game time is 7:00pm at SaskTel Centre.
