Blades prepared for first place Wheat Kings
On paper, the two teams couldn’t be more different – the powerhouse Brandon Wheat Kings, who have eight players with at least 20 points, taking on the young Saskatoon Blades, who have none. Still, the Blades are confident going into the game.
“We need wins, and we look at every game now as a game we can win” said Josh Uhrich, who scored two goals in the teams overtime loss to Swift Current on Saturday. “We have had some games this year where we didn’t have enough heart, didn’t play all the way through, now, we’re playing hard, we’ve turned the corner”.
The team lost a heartbreaker to the Broncos, 8-7 in overtime. Still, they say they’re using that as a learning experience.
“Us older guys, we’ve had games like that” said the captain Brett Stovin, a veteran of over 200 WHL games. “I remember a game in Regina a couple years ago where we came back and won after being down 7-2. So these young guys, they get good experience from a game like this, learn how to rally against the good teams”.
This is the start of a tough stretch of games for the Blades. After the game against Brandon they’ll bus home before playing host to Moose Jaw on Wednesday. They’ll have a day off on Thursday, before hosting Brandon on Friday, and travelling to Moose Jaw to take on the Warriors Saturday night.
