RECAP: Wheat Kings battles back to beat Blades Friday night
Brandon, MB – The Saskatoon Blades squandered a 3-1 lead on Friday night eventually falling 6-3 to the Wheat Kings in Brandon. Saskatoon remains at 55 points on the season with their record slipping to 26-26-2-1 on the year; still tied with Prince Albert who will visit the Blades tomorrow night.
In what was the 6th meeting of the season between the Blades and Wheat Kings, Saskatoon got out to a strong start. Despite giving up the first goal the Blades stormed back scoring the next three.
Max Gerlach scored his 26th of the season in the first period to tie the game at 1-1. Then in the 2nd stanza Brad Goethals (11) and Dawson Davidson (8) made it 3-1 for the Blades. Brandon would get one late in the period to get within one heading into the second intermission.
In the final frame, Brandon scored the tying goal and seemingly took full control of the momentum. From there the Wheat Kings went on the add a game winner and two more into an empty net to fend of the the Blades and earn the two points in the standings.
The Blades ended the night 0/2 on the power play but managed to shut down the Wheaties’ man advantage going 3/3 on the PK. Tyler Brown made 19 saves on 23 shots while Logan Thompson went 33/36 at the other end.
Saskatoon is back in action tomorrow (Saturday) night at home to the Prince Albert Raiders. Both the Blades and Raiders are tied with 55 points, but the Raiders have the edge and currently hold the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference thanks to having played one less game.
