Tonight
The Saskatoon Blades (42-10-2-3) are back in action at SaskTel Centre against the Red Deer Rebels (29-20-2-6) after enjoying a rare weekend off away from the rink.
Saskatoon suffered a 4-1 loss to the Brandon Wheat Kings at home Friday, snapping their 11-game win streak and 12-game win streak on home soil. The Blades enjoyed parents weekend Saturday and Sunday and look to secure the season-series win against the Rebels.
The Blades lead the season-series 2-1 but dropped the last meeting Jan. 17th in Red Deer 5-4. Saskatoon’s guaranteed themselves home-ice advantage in the first round and have their sights set on the Scotty Munro Trophy with 89 points, the most in the WHL.
Who to Watch
With an assist in Friday’s loss to Brandon, captain Trevor Wong set a new career-high in points with 87 (13G, 74A) in 57 games. The 20-year-old centre is on a three-game point streak with four assists in that time. The WHL’s assist leader is four points shy of 250 in his career and could crack the 100-point plateau this season for the first time.
6-foot-3 forward Easton Armstrong is expected to suit up for his 200th career WHL game tonight. The Denver, CO native has 53 goals and 89 points between time with the Regina Pats, Winnipeg ICE/Wenatchee Wild, and now Saskatoon. Armstrong’s potted 21 goals and 37 points in 47 games with Saskatoon this season after being acquired from Wenatchee on Oct. 20th. In 51 games total, Armstrong has 46 points (27G, 19A).
NHL draft-eligible goalie Evan Gardner is a perfect 10-0 on home ice in his first WHL season. The 6-foot-2 rookie netminder leads the league with a .929 save-percentage and is second with a 1.89 goals-against-average. Gardner is 17-5-0-2 on the campaign and has won his last five straight starts.
