2019 WHL Cup: Day 4 Blades’ prospects recap
Calgary, AB – It was Saturday full of upsets at the 2019 Western Hockey League Cup yesterday afternoon as the top two teams from the round robin will not be playing for a Gold Medal.
Brandon Lisowsky, Hayden Smith and Team British Columbia finished 2-1 for 2nd place which meant they would be taking on Team Manitoba who finished 1-2. Manitoba got out to a 4-1 lead after 2 but team BC stormed back to score three straight goals including the game-tying-goal by Blades prospect Lisowksy as he scored with just over 5 minutes to go. Manitoba ended up taking this one as they scored with just one second to go in the game. The play was reviewed and the goal counted as with Manitoba headed to the Gold Medal game.
Team Alberta finished the Round Robin at 3-0 and they played the 0-3 Saskatchewan side in the second semi-final game. Saskatchewan boasts two Blades prospects, although neither played in this game as Mason Bueckert was injured while Ethan Chadwick took his turn as the back-up goalie with Saskatchewan continuing to rotate netminders. The teams entered the 3rd period deadlocked at 2-all until Alberta took the lead 28 seconds into the final period. Saskatchewan was quick to respond as they tied it back up 1:12 later and got the game winning goal with just under 7 minutes to play. Saskatchewan would add an insurance marker to make the final 5-3 and send them to the Gold Medal game for the first time in history to play Team Manitoba while Alberta plays BC in the Bronze.
Stay tuned for tomorrow’s tournament recap as the WHL Cup finishes this afternoon
