Recap: Blades close out road trip with 4-1 win in Red Deer
A much different Blades team showed up at the rink on Saturday night as they scored four times and were perfect on the penalty kill leading to a 4-1 victory over the Red Deer Rebels. The win wraps up a three game road trip for Saskatoon picking up four points along the way to improve to 3-5-0-0 on the season.
The game started in the opposite fashion of Friday’s game for Saskatoon; finding themselves on a power play within the first five minutes of the game. The other ingredient missing from Friday’s game also showed up early in the contest as Braylon Shmyr buried his 7th of the season on that first power play courtesy of his line mate Cam Hebig. Brad Goethals was credited with the other assist and the single tally would hold up through the first twenty.
Neither team managed to find twine in the middle frame, but a sign of adjusted discipline was evident as the Blades didn’t give the Rebels a chance on the power play until 8:14 into the second period.
Intensity increased in the third period as the Rebels evened the score at 1-1 just 51 seconds in. Red Deer captain Grayson Pawlenchuk slipped through the Blades defence to get in all alone on Ryan Kubic before beating him with a quick wrister on the glove side.
Then after killing off two more minor penalties, Cam Hebig restored the Blades lead with a wrist shot of his own for his 5th goal this year. Later in the frame, Chase Wouters drove hard to the net and paid the price for his second goal of the season. Wouters was checked hard into the end boards just after releasing his shot but the jubilation of seeing the puck cross the goal line had Wouters back to his skates celebrating with his team mates in no time. Minutes later Libor Hájek put the game out of reach with his 2nd goal of the season, 2nd point of the night, and extended his point streak to three games (2G,2A).
Cam Hebig (1G,1A), Braylon Shmyr (1G,1A), Brad Goethals (2A), and Libor Hájek (1G,1A) all tallied multiple points for Saskatoon in the victory. Ryan Kubic earned 2nd star honours stopping 27/28 shots faced for his 3rd win of the season, while Cam Hebig was named the game’s 1st star.
The Blades return home for their next game on Wednesday, October 18th at SaskTel Centre against Ryan Kubic’s former team, the Vancouver Giants.
