This week, we’re profiling the last of the overagers in camp — F Mike Brown.
Brown came to the Americans in a January trade with Swift Current to add a physical presence to the front line.
He delivered in helping Tri-City to the U.S. Division and Western Conference titles.
During the preseason, Brown showed an improved scoring touch — five goals and four assists in eight games — but rest assured, Americans fans. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound left winger knows his role is still pretty much the same.
“A bunch of our scoring guys were gone during camp, and I tried to help out in that department,” said Brown, who has 12 career goals in 153 games. “But my role has not changed a whole lot. I’m still the big guy on the team, and I have to play that way.”
What else is there to know about Brown?
First hockey team: The Trails West Tykes team at age 6 in his native Calgary, Alberta. “I’m still friends with a couple of guys who were on that team.”
Favorite hockey moment: Brown listed two — his first WHL goal as a 17-year-old with Swift Current against the Prince George Cougars, and winning the Western Conference title last year with the Americans. “Just the whole experience, especially the feeling after winning each round, coming into the dressing room and getting to share it with these guys.”
Childhood hero: Joe Sakic. “I liked the Colorado Avalanche, and he was always the best.”
What’s playing on the IPod? Tom Petty. His favorite song is You Wreck Me.
And on the TV? Rescue Me or Sons of Anarchy, both on fX.
When he grows up, he wants to be: Following in Kimo von Oelhoffen’s footsteps … “I want to own my own business, maybe a restaurant. A bar and grill.”
If he weren’t playing hockey, he’d play: Lacrosse. “They’re both pretty physical games. And they’re both physically demanding, too.”
Favorite sports movie: Sandlot. “My favorite scene is when he’s getting chased by the dog.”
