Matt MacKenzie got to know the Tri-Cities a little bit last spring.
At that time, MacKenzie was a defenseman for the Calgary Hitmen, the team the Tri-City Americans were playing for the Western Hockey League title.
The Hitmen won the title in five games, with MacKenzie scoring a pair of goals in a Game 1 win that set the tone for the series.
This season, the Hitmen have hit the skids, dropping to the Eastern Conference basement, so MacKenzie had a feeling he might be dealt at Monday’s WHL trade deadline.
And he had a feeling what his destination might be.
“I had an idea it would be Tri-City,” he said Wednesday while relaxing at the Red Lion Hotel across Columbia Center Blvd. from his new home arena, the Toyota Center.
MacKenzie was acquired from Calgary for a pair of 18-year-olds, F Brooks Macek and D Spencer Humphries, and a conditional 2012 third-round bantam pick.
