Something New – Just Days Before the Tournament
May 12, 2009Rimouski, QC – Just days before the 2009 MasterCard Memorial Cup gets underway, the members of the Organizing Committee are pleased to announce that tickets will be available for individual hockey games, as well as for a special package of the Océanic’s games. In addition, many surprises are in store during the ten days of festivities in Rimouski.

Now that the teams from the West and from Ontario have been chosen and have informed the Organizing Committee of their needs, some tickets have been made available and will be sold individually. Seated tickets for games 1 through 6 will be on sale at the Océanic box office starting Wednesday, May 13th, at a cost of $70 each. Tickets for the semi-final and final games will be available for $75 each. Numbered standing-room-only tickets will be available for $35 each. When the numbered standing-room-only tickets have all been sold, regular un-numbered standing-room-only tickets will be available for $25 each. For fans of the “Team of a Whole Region”, a special package is available for $189; it will include tickets to the three games the Océanic will play in the round robin on May 15th, 17th and 20th.

The members of the Organizing Committee and of the Canadian Hockey League are also happy to announce to local hockey fans that another wonderful surprise will be in Rimouski for this event. In addition to the Memorial Cup trophy, the legendary Stanley Cup will make a 48-hour stopover in Rimouski. The renowned trophy will arrive in the Lower St. Lawrence region on the evening of Wednesday, May 20th and leave again on Friday, May 22nd. It will be on display in the Hall of Fame tent in the Memorial Village next Thursday and Friday, May 21st and 22nd. This visit is a gift to all the hockey fans in the region.

In addition, there are still tickets available for the CHL Awards Ceremony, presented by the City of Rimouski, for $7.00 each, as well as for the Océanic Alumni Game, presented by TELUS, for $7.50 each. Both events will be held on Saturday, May 23rd. The CHL Awards Ceremony will recognize the remarkable performances of the best junior hockey players in the country. Special entertainment will accompany the presentation of the CHL individual trophies. Later the same day, former players of the “Team of a Whole Region” will attempt to impress and thrill their fans once again in an entertaining and surprise-filled match.

The members of the Organizing Committee would also like to repeat their invitation to the entire community to come join us for the spectacular Arrival of the Cup ceremony this Thursday, May 14th, at 11:30 a.m. on the football field of the Guillaume Leblanc Sports Complex. Young and old alike are invited to come celebrate the beginning of ten days of festivities and to support the players of the “Team of a Whole Region”. In addition to the arrival of the Memorial Cup — which will be breathtaking — there will be plenty of entertainment and surprises for fans of all ages. Everyone is invited to this event. Come one, come all!

Near the Colisée of Rimouski, the party will also get underway in the Memorial Village on Friday, May 15th. Inside the Molson Ex Tent, all of the games will be broadcast — for free — throughout the Championship. And to kick the festivities off in style, the Boogie Wonder Band will be on stage for a great show right after the opening game. Everyone is also invited to come delight in the circus atmosphere created by a troop of jugglers, stiltwalkers and fire-breathers in action. In short, there will be plenty of activities for the whole family and everyone is invited to enjoy them.

With regard to the event’s four Honorary Presidents, the members of the Organizing Committee are pleased to announce that three of them have confirmed their presence — the fourth is still busy with the Pittsburgh Penguins for a seventh playoff game. The first to arrive in Rimouski will be Michel Ouellet, who will be in the city starting Sunday, May 17th. Michel should arrive at about 4:30 p.m., just in time for the drop of the puck in the Océanic’s game against the Windsor Spitfires. Vincent Lecavalier and Brad Richards will also be in town starting Wednesday afternoon, May 20th, for a short visit.
