Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League today announced that Robert Slaney of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles is the Boston Pizza CHL Player of the Week for the week ending December 14. Slaney scored five goals and two assists for seven points in four games with a plus-minus rating of plus-1.

Slaney began his scoring Friday night in Saint John as the Screaming Eagles beat the Sea Dogs 4-3 in overtime. He had a second period power play goal and set up Nick MacNeil for the overtime winner collecting two points on the night. The two teams squared off again on Saturday and Slaney led the charge for the Screaming Eagles scoring two second period goals including a power play goal followed by a shorthanded marker that would stand as the game winning goal. Slaney was named first star of the 5-2 win. Slaney and the Screaming Eagles finished their Maritimes road trip in Moncton on Sunday shutting out the Wildcats 3-0. Slaney was again named first star of the game after opening the scoring with the game winning goal and adding an assist and the empty netter in the victory.

Slaney, a 20-year-old forward from Upper Island Cove, Newfoundland, is playing in his fourth QMJHL season with the Screaming Eagles. Slaney was the 2007-08 winner of the Marcel-Robert Trophy as the Scholastic Player of the Year. Slaney currently leads the Screaming Eagles and his seventh in league scoring with 18 goals and 28 assists for 46 points in 34 games this season.

Ian Duval of the Moose Jaw Warriors receives honourable mention as the WHL’s nominee for this award after scoring five goals and two assists for seven points in three games. The Warriors won all three games and Duval was twice recognized as second star of the game as well as first star in the other contest. Cameron Gaunce of the OHL’s Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors was the Boston Pizza OHL Player of the Week with two three-point games accumulating one goal and five assists in three games.
