Oakville rebounds for commanding win over York-Simcoe
The Oakville Rangers had a tough first assignment on Monday morning, falling 4-3 in overtime to the GTHL champion Vaughan Kings.
Eyeing a shot at redemption, they came out flying against an OMHA opponent in the York-Simcoe Express, skating to a 6-0 win.
Ryder Carey and Evan Headrick led the charge, with Carey scoring his second and third of the tournament while Headrick potted a pair of his own. Christian Armstrong and Ethan Belchetz also scored for Oakville as they outshot York-Simcoe 34-17 and grabbed two points.
Jacob Saldana turned aside 17 shots for the shutout win.
Parker Graham started the scoring, coming out of the corner with possession and found Headrick in the slot to open the scoring and make it 1-0 Oakville. The Rangers’ second goal came at the 11:35 mark of the first period after the Rangers came streaking in across the blue line and Armstrong received a pass from his centreman, taking a shot that was was initially stopped by Express goaltender Riley Barkey. Armstrong found his own rebound and made it 2-0.
Oakville tacked on four second period goals, with Carey making it 3-0 after corralling a loose puck and wiring it past Barkey. Oakville’s fourth was almost identical to their second goal as they had a 3-on-2 across the blue line, with Belchetz going high over the glove to make it 4-0. The Rangers wrapped up their scoring spree after Carey was able to get a good shot off from a centering pass to make it 6-0.
York-Simcoe’s day is over and they will return to the ice on Tuesday when they take on TPH at 9:45am.
For the Rangers, their next game will be against the Sun County Panthers on Tuesday at 1:30pm.
