Ian Vucko’s goal and an assist led the OMHA Champion York Simcoe Express to victory in their OHL Cup opener. Matthew MacDougall scored the deciding goal 12:22 into the second period before additional markers from Vucko and Ian MacLean sealed the deal in a 4-2 win over the Toronto Red Wings.
Express captain Cameron Hillis found the back of the net in the win, and is thrilled to be competing in the OHL Cup showcase.
“I know all of the guys have really enjoyed the time here so far,” he said. “We’re focused and here to win. We want to follow through on the goal we set at the beginning of the season and win the OHL Cup. The atmosphere and the whole experience has been outstanding.”
York Simcoe goaltender Andrei Berezinskiy earned Player of the Game honours, being beaten just twice on the afternoon on goals from Matthew Hayami and Christian Lepone.
“We’re fortunate to have two great goaltenders,” Hillis added. “Both Andrei and Pierce (Charleson) give us confidence to go out and play our game. They’re always there behind us.”
The Red Wings fall to 1-1 in the showcase headed into a matchup against the Mississauga Senators on Friday while York Simcoe takes on the Greater Kingston Jr. Frontenacs late Wednesday.
