A pair of highly regarded tournament participants in the United States and Russia notched shutout victories on Sunday in the only two games on the schedule. Here’s a look at Sunday’s action.
UNITED STATES 6, GERMANY 0
German goaltender Ilja Sharipov had a busy day at the rink in Montreal on Sunday, facing 53 shots in a 6-0 loss to the United States as his team is still in search of its first goal of the tournament. The speed and skill of Team USA overwhelmed the Germans as goals came from Sonny Milano (Plymouth Whalers), Auston Matthews, Hudson Fasching, Jack Eichel and Dylan Larkin (2).
Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds goaltender Brandon Halverson posted a 14 save shutout for the Americans who improved to 2-0 in the tournament.
The United States faces Slovakia on Monday at 4:00pm ET while Germany faces the Slovaks on Tuesday at 8:00pm ET.
RUSSIA 7, SWITZERLAND 0
After a momentous 5-2 win over the Czech Republic on Saturday, Switzerland wasn’t able to replicate the strong effort on Sunday against Russia. Goals from Rushan Rafikov, Alexander Dergachev and Pavel Buchnevich gave Russia a 3-0 lead after one period at the Air Canada Centre enroute to a 7-0 victory.
Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds forward Sergey Tolchinsky provided a goal for the Russians while additional markers came from Alexander Sharov, Vladislav Kamenev and Vyacheslav Leshchenko. Goaltender Igor Shesterkin made 32 saves in the shutout victory.
Russia meets Sweden on Monday night at 5:00pm ET in Toronto while Switzerland will take on Denmark at 5:00pm ET on Tuesday.
