Wolves captain Donovan McCoy commits to Providence College
Sudbury Wolves captain and overage defenceman Donovan McCoy has announced his commitment to Providence College for the 2025-26 NCAA hockey season.
A native of Belleville, ON., McCoy was selected 15th overall by the Peterborough Petes in the first round of the 2020 OHL Priority Selection. The 6-foot-1 right-shot blueliner contributed significantly as an assistant captain to the Petes’ 2022-23 season, helping them secure the J. Ross Robertson Cup as OHL Champions before being acquired by the Wolves in January 2024. He served as captain on both his respective clubs and has posted 94 points (16-78–94) over 251 career regular season games.
Last year, he received an invitation from the Pittsburgh Penguins to participate in their NHL development camp and was the recipient of the 2024 Dayna Brons Honorary Award for his work in the Hockey Gives Blood player ambassador program in support of Canadian Blood Services.
Providence College, a private Roman Catholic institution based in Providence, Rhode Island, is home to the Friars men’s hockey team – an NCAA Division I program that competes in the Hockey East conference. Notable alumni include Noel Acciari, Brandon Tanev, and Mark Jankowski, all of whom continue to play in the NHL.
McCoy is the second OHL player to join the Friars for the 2025-26 season, joining forward Beau Jelsma of the Barrie Colts.
