WJC Day 2 Recap: December 26
CANADA 16, GERMANY 2
Canada is off to a roaring start at the 2021 World Juniors in Edmonton, defeating a shorthanded German squad 16-2 in their tournament opener.
Oshawa Generals forward Philip Tomasino scored twice and added an assist, finishing with a plus-4 rating while newly minted alternate captain Connor McMichael of the London Knights tallied a goal and two assists. Mississauga Steelheads defender Thomas Harley and Saginaw Spirit centreman Ryan Suzuki also found the scoresheet while teammate Cole Perfetti finished with three assists.
Buffalo Sabres prospect Dylan Cozens (Lethbridge Hurricanes) earned Player of the Game recognition for Canada with three goals and three assists while Peyton Krebs (Winnipeg ICE), Dawson Mercer (Chicoutimi Sagueneens) and Alex Newhook each scored twice.
London Knights CHL Import Draft Selection John Peterka was one of two Germans with a multi-point finish, collecting a goal and an assist in the lopsided defeat.
Canada’s seven-goal second period tied an all-time Canadian World Junior record set in 1999 against Kazakhstan.
Canada outshot Germany 44-15, with the Germans down several skaters who were finishing up quarantine periods as part of COVID-19 protocols. Canada improves to 15-0-0 against Germany in the tournament all-time, outscoring them 91-21 in the process.
Action continues on Sunday with Canada (0-1) facing-off against Slovakia (1-0) at 6:00pm ET. The Germans will have the day off before returning to face Slovakia on Monday at 9:30pm ET.

SWEDEN 7, CZECH REPUBLIC 1
Sweden got its 2021 World Juniors schedule started with a convincing 7-1 victory over the Czech Republic as defenders Victor Soderstrom and Philip Broberg each notched three assists.
Hamilton Bulldogs forward Jan Mysak opened up the scoring for the Czechs, but it was all downhill from there as Sweden responded with seven unanswered including three on the power play and one shorthanded. Arvid Costmar, Albin Sundsvik, Emil Heineman, Theodor Niederbach, Elmer Soderblom, Oscar Bjerselius and Noel Gunler found the scoresheet for the Swedes.
Soo Greyhounds netminder Nick Malik turned aside 34 shots for the Czech Republic as they were outshot 41-25. Sweden’s Hugo Alnefelt picked up the win with a 24-save showing.
The Czechs have the benefit of a quick turnaround, looking to rebound against Russia at 9:30pm on Sunday. Sweden is off until Monday when they face Austria.

UNITED STATES 11, AUSTRIA 0
The United States capped-off a high-scoring Saturday in Edmonton with an 11-0 blanking of Austria. The win comes on the heels of a 5-3 loss to Russia in their tournament-opener on Friday.
Outshooting the Austrians 73-10, Hamilton Bulldogs forward Arthur Kaliyev registered a pair of assists for the Americans, who were led offensively by a four-point effort (2-2–4) from Trevor Zegras. Minnesota Wild draftee Matthew Boldy recorded a hat-trick while Brendan Brisson also scored a pair.
Dustin Wolf (Everett Silvertips) posted the shutout on a quiet night at his end of the ice.
The United States (1-1) is off until Tuesday as they prepare for a preliminary round matchup against the Czech Republic. Austria (0-1) will face Sweden (1-0) on Sunday.
