Wednesday Highlights: Coskey’s career night powers soaring Spirit

 

SAGINAW 9, FLINT 1
Cole Coskey (18, 19, 20) buried his first OHL hat-trick as part of a career-high six-point night as the Saginaw Spirit soared to a 9-1 win in Flint. The Spirit capture the I-75 Divide Cup, defeating the Firebirds for a sixth straight game while outshooting them 39-22. Coskey’s six points tie a Spirit single-game record as he joins Vincent Trocheck as the second player in franchise history to put up six points in a game. OHL Defenceman of the Month Bode Wilde (10), Brady Gilmour (8), Blade Jenkins (17), Reagan O’Grady (4), Mason Millman (2) and Danny Katic (5) also scored for Saginaw in their fourth straight win while sophomore forward Ethan Keppen provided the lone goal for Flint. Ivan Prosvetov stopped 21 of 22 shots as Saginaw improved to 22-11-2-2 with their eighth win in the past nine games. Newcomer Cody Morgan made his Firebirds debut as Flint fell to 5-32-2-0.

OWEN SOUND 3, GUELPH 2
Kevin Hancock (29, 30, 31) provided all the offence the Owen Sound Attack would need, scoring three times as they defeated the visiting Guelph Storm 3-2. After a scoreless first period, Hancock scored twice in the second before netting the game winner midway through the third for his second hat-trick of the season. Sophomore netminder Mack Guzda earned second star honours, making 31 saves for his first win since Nov. 28th. Nico Daws turned aside 36 shots for the Storm, who came up short behind goals from Isaac Ratcliffe (21) and Alexey Toropchenko (10). Owen Sound outshot Guelph 39-33, earning their third straight win over the Storm to improve to 3-2 against them on the season. The Attack climb within two points of second place Guelph in the Midwest Division with a 20-14-1-2 record. The Storm, who are without Cam Hillis and Jack Hanley to injuries, also lost the services of forward Pavel Gogolev in the loss. Guelph sees its five-game winning streak snapped, falling to 19-10-3-4.

HAMILTON 7, KINGSTON 1
The Hamilton Bulldogs handled the Kingston Frontenacs in a battle of black and gold. The Dogs took a 7-1 win on home ice as rookie Avery Hayes (4, 5) earned first star honours with a pair of goals while Kade Landry and Logan Morrison each had three assists. Hamilton outshot Kingston 41-22 and went 3-for-8 on the power play as Arthur Kaliyev (27), Brandon Saigeon (24), Matthew Strome (15), Nicolas Mattinen (12) and Josh Wainman (1) also got in on the scoring. Adrien Beraldo (3) scored for the second time in as many games since joining the Frontenacs for Kingston’s lone marker. Zachary Roy stopped 21 of 22 for the win as the Bulldogs improved to 17-18-3-0. Kingston suffers a third straight loss, falling to 11-26-1-0.
