U18 Worlds Primer: Brennan Othmann (Flint Firebirds)
Offensively gifted Flint Firebirds winger Brennan Othmann will be counted upon to find the scoresheet for Team Canada in Texas. The 18-year-old is a ‘B’ rated prospect on NHL Central Scouting’s latest Players to Watch list.
NEW BENCHMARKS IN FLINT
Othmann set new rookie records for points (33) and goals (17) in a Firebirds uniform during the 2019-20 season. The Pickering, Ont. native built off an impressive 146-point campaign riding shotgun with U18 teammate Shane Wright for the OHL Cup champion Don Mills Flyers in 2018-19.
JUST LIKE DAD
Othmann spent the 2020-21 season with EHC Olten in Switzerland, the same country his father Gery played professionally from 1991-2001. Othmann’s uncle, Robert, was also an accomplished Swiss pro, playing five seasons with EHC Olten from 2002-07 as part of a 16-year pro career in Switzerland. Othmann put up 16 points (7-9–16) in 34 games against grown men. His Canadian U18 teammate Mason McTavish (Peterborough Petes) was a teammate in Switzerland.
STRING OF SUCCESS
Othmann has managed to be a key contributor on successful teams throughout his hockey journey, winning championships across various levels in 2014, 2018, and 2019. He had a strong showing for Canada Black at the 2019 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge and was voted to the OHL’s first all-rookie team in 2019-20.
Othmann and 12 other OHL players will hit the ice in Plano and Frisco, Texas on April 27th when Canada opens its tournament schedule against Sweden.
