U SPORTS Report: Jan. 17, 2024
A total of 228 OHL alumni are playing in the U SPORTS men’s hockey ranks this season. Throughout the year the U SPORTS Report will keep tabs on former OHL names doing great things in the OUA, AUS and Canada West ranks on the road to the 2024 U SPORTS University Cup to be held from March 14-17 in Toronto, Ont.
LANCERS TAKE DOWN TORONTO TEAMS IN OVERTIME
The Windsor Lancers had a standout weekend, defeating both visiting Toronto universities in overtime. Opening their weekend on Friday, the Lancers took down the Toronto Metropolitan University Bold as Soo Greyhounds alumni Holden Wale (2-1–3) and Keegan McMullen (1-1–2) joined former Peterborough Petes forward Brady Hinz (1-1–2), and Flint Firebirds alumnus Jake Durham (0-2–2) in recording multi-point showings in the 5-4 overtime win.
Windsor closed out the weekend with another victory on Saturday, defeating the University of Toronto Varsity Blues in extra time with contributions from Saginaw Spirit graduate Mason Kohn (1-1) before Wale would net the 3-2 overtime winner. Former Kitchener Rangers netminder Nathan Torchia stayed solid between the pipes, stopping 83 of the 89 shots that came his way over the weekend.

BATTLE OF THE CAUSEWAY
The Queen’s University Gaels defeated their crosstown rival in the Battle of the Causeway on Saturday, earning a 4-2 win over the RMC Paladins. The victory saw scoring contributions from Niagara IceDogs alumnus Daniel Michaud and Saginaw Spirit graduate Dalton Duhart, as former Kingston Frontenacs blueliner Lucas Peric, Ottawa 67’s alumnus Cameron Tolnai, and Erie Otters graduate Alex Robert each recorded an assist.

LAKERS LEAVE LONDON WITH A PAIR OF WINS
The Nipissing Lakers paid a visit to London over the weekend, defeating the Western Mustangs in back-to-back wins. Former North Bay Battalion forward Harrison Caines registered a goal and an an assist, while Hamilton Bulldogs graduate Payton Vescio tallied a helper as the Lakers defeated the Mustangs 4-1 on Friday.
Nipissing closed out their weekend with another 6-1 win on Saturday as Caines registered three helpers.
GOLDEN HAWKS CLINCH SUCCESSFUL WEEKEND IN THUNDER BAY
The Laurier Golden Hawks had a successful visit to Thunder Bay over the weekend, defeating the Lakehead Thunderwolves in consecutive showings. Laurier came back from two-goal deficit on Friday to defeat Lakehead 4-2 as former Barrie Colts forward Sam Rhodes scored on top of North Bay Battalion alumnus Patrick Brown‘s pair of goals.
The Golden Hawks returned with a solid performance on Saturday defeating the Thunderwolves 3-1 as Brown found the back of the net, while Rhodes and Hamilton Bulldogs graduate Conor Ali each contributed an assist to clinch their fourth straight victory.

UPEI FINDS THEIR WAY BACK INTO THE WIN COLUMN
The UPEI Panthers found their way back into the win column over the weekend, earning six points in back-to-back wins. Scoring five unanswered goals, the Panthers defeated the Dalhousie Tigers 7-2 on Friday as Erie Otters alumni Elias Cohen (2-0) and Noah Sedore (1-2) each contributed multi-point showings, while Owen Sound Attack graduate Kaleb Pearson (2-3) had a standout five-point performance.
The Panthers held on to close out their weekend with a 3-2 victory over the StFX X-men on Saturday, with winning contributions form Kingston Frontenacs alumnus Josh Currie, former Erie Otters blueliner Kurtis Henry, Cohen and Sedore.

BADGERS BACK ON TOP
The OUA West leaders earned a pair of wins over the weekend, as the Brock Badgers defeated the York Lions on Friday followed by the UQTR Patriotes on Saturday.
Starting their weekend with a a 5-1 road win, Kingston Frontenacs graduate Tyler Burnie and London Knights alumnus Cole Tymkin lit the lamp, while former Guelph Storm forward Jacob Roach recorded a pair of helpers against the Lions.
Ranked third among all U SPORTS point-getters this season, Roach registered the game-tying goal to make it 2-2 on Saturday, before Brock would defeat the Patriotes 3-2 in a shootout with a goal from former Oshawa Generals forward Ryan Stepien.

UNB STAYS IN THE TOP SPOT
The UNB Reds remain in the top spot, building on their 22-0-0-0 record with a pair of wins at home over the weekend. Former Hamilton Bulldogs blueliner Kade Landry recorded a pair of helpers in the Reds’ 5-0 win over the Saint Mary’s Huskies on Friday, as Ottawa 67’s graduate Austen Keating also extended his earnings (34), now ranking fourth among all U SPORTS point-getters.
The Reds sealed their perfect weekend with a 4-1 win over Acadia on Saturday as former London Knights forward Jason Willms, Saginaw Spirit graduate Brady Gilmour, former Soo Greyhounds forward Cole MacKay and Kitchener Rangers alumnus Michael Petizian all found the back of the net.
