Spitfires’ Letowski earns 100th OHL coaching victory
Windsor Spitfires head coach Trevor Letowski has reached the century mark for OHL coaching wins, achieving the milestone in Sunday’s 4-3 overtime win over the Saginaw Spirit at the WFCU Centre.
Daniel D’Amico scored with 1:31 remaining in overtime as the Spits overcame a late deficit to enter the holiday break on a high note, holding a 15-16-2-1 record in the West Division.
A former Sarnia Sting forward who played over 600 NHL games between Phoenix, Vancouver, Columbus and Carolina between 1998-2008, Letowski is in his fourth full season as an OHL head coach, spending that time between Sarnia (2013-15) and Windsor (2017-present). The Thunder Bay, Ont. native has also served as an assistant and associate coach in the league dating back to 2010, hoisting the Memorial Cup with the Spitfires on home ice in 2017.
As an assistant under Rocky Thompson in 2016-17, Letowski oversaw one of the best penalty killing units in recent OHL history, finishing with an 88.5% efficiency rate, a figure tied for the best on record since the league began keeping penalty killing percentages back in 1997-98.
During his time as a head coach in the OHL, Letowski has assisted in the development of prominent names in Anthony DeAngelo, Nikolay Goldobin, Jordan Kyrou, Jakob Chychrun, Pavel Zacha, Logan Brown and Sean Day.
The Spits will be back in action on Friday December 28th when they visit the London Knights.
