A closer look at six players from the 2019-20 OHL season:
Ty Dellandrea (Flint Firebirds/Dallas Stars)
Flint Firebirds captain and Mickey Renaud Captain’s Trophy recipient Ty Dellandrea is headed to Edmonton with the Dallas Stars following a season that included 70 points (32-38–70) over 47 games. Known as one of the OHL’s top faceoff men, Dellandrea helped Canada win gold at the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship in Ostrava, Czech Republic. The recently turned 20-year-old from Port Perry, Ont. registered 216 points (94-122–216) over 231 career regular season games with the Firebirds and was Dallas’ first round (13th overall) pick in the 2018 NHL Draft.
Liam Foudy (London Knights/Columbus Blue Jackets)
Another member of Canada’s gold medal-winning National Junior Team, Liam Foudy won’t be seeing his first NHL action if he suits up for the Columbus Blue Jackets in qualifier action. Foudy made his NHL debut back in February, playing in a pair of games for the Jackets while recording his first career assist in the process. The highly athletic 20-year-old from Scarborough, Ont. comes off a 68-point season (28-40–68) for the London Knights over 45 games. A co-captain with the Knights in 2019-20, Foudy wrapped up his fourth OHL season with 191 career points (97-94–191) in 230 career regular season games. He was Columbus’ first round (18th overall) pick in the 2018 NHL Draft.
Thomas Harley (Mississauga Steelheads/Dallas Stars)
An elite skater that has gradually developed into one of the OHL’s top defencemen, Thomas Harley will accompany the Dallas Stars in Edmonton. The 6-foot-4, 195Ib. 18-year-old recorded a career-high 18 goals along with 57 points in 59 games this past season after being Dallas’ first round (19th overall) pick last summer. Harley has recorded 130 points (30-100–130) in his 189-game OHL career.
Connor McMichael (London Knights/Washington Capitals)
One of the OHL’s four 100-point scorers this season, London Knights centreman Connor McMichael has made the cut with the Washington Capitals. The 19-year-old from Ajax, Ont. recorded career-highs with 47 goals, 55 assists and 102 points over 52 games as the Knights won a Midwest Division title. McMichael also helped power Canada to World Junior gold after being Washington’s first round (25th overall) pick last summer. The 6-foot, 181Ib. pivot has 190 points (91-99–190) over 179 career OHL regular season games between London and Hamilton.
Alec Regula (London Knights/Chicago Blackhawks)
The Chicago Blackhawks acquired Alec Regula in an October 2019 trade that saw another OHL product in Brendan Perlini go the other way to the Detroit Red Wings. Now Regula has made it out of training camp and onto Chicago’s playoff qualifying roster as they get set to take on the host Edmonton Oilers in a best-of-five series. The 6-foot-4, 207Ib. Regula led all OHL defenders with 27 goals, tacking on 33 assists for 60 points over 56 games. The 19-year-old from West Bloomfield, Mich. wrapped up his third season in Knights green and gold with 124 points (45-79–124) over 189 regular season games. He was voted the Western Conference’s Best Defensive Defenceman in the 2019-20 OHL Coaches Poll. Regula was originally Detroit’s third round (67th overall) pick in the 2018 NHL Draft.
Nick Robertson (Peterborough Petes/Toronto Maple Leafs)
The OHL’s leading goal-scorer will accompany the Toronto Maple Leafs into the ‘bubble’ for playoff qualifier action against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Peterborough Petes winger Nick Robertson scored 55 goals in just 46 games this past season and was named the CHL’s Most Sportsmanlike Player. The 18-year-old from Northville, Mich. finished with 86 points (55-31–86) and a plus/minus rating of plus-29 after being Toronto’s second round (53rd overall) pick at the NHL Draft last summer.
