The West Division-leading Windsor Spitfires open the 2025 OHL Playoffs against the Guelph Storm, a seventh seed with a point to prove and a future Memorial Cup on the horizon. It should be an exciting first-round matchup between two clubs that know each other well and one that carries a little extra edge given what happened to Windsor a year ago.

The regular-season series was split evenly at 2-2, though with an interesting caveat. All four meetings took place in the first few months of the season, and the home team won every single time. With Windsor holding home ice advantage, that trend could prove to be a significant factor.

 

Windsor Spitfires

The Spitfires are back, and they are hungry. After being reverse-swept in last year’s playoffs by the Kitchener Rangers, Windsor has spent the entire 2025-26 season with something to prove. They responded with a 44-win campaign and the top seed in the West Division, which tells you everything you need to know about how this group has channelled that disappointment.

Between the pipes, Joey Costanzo has been nothing short of historic. The veteran netminder surpassed 100 franchise wins this season, becoming the first goaltender to reach that milestone since 1980, a remarkable achievement that speaks to his consistency and longevity in Windsor. Backing him up, Michael Newlove has also put up impressive numbers, giving the Spitfires one of the more reliable goaltending tandems in the conference.

Up front, Liam Greentree recorded his 300th career point this season while leading the club in scoring, cementing himself as the engine of Windsor’s offence. Anthony Cristoforo has been one of the more versatile and impactful players in the lineup, capable of contributing both as a forward and a defenceman, the kind of player coaches love to have available in the playoffs. On the blue line, Carson Woodall nearly doubled his scoring output from a season ago, taking a significant step forward at exactly the right time.

The one concern for Windsor heading into the series is the absence of Ethan Belchetz, their 6-foot-5 forward and NHL draft prospect, who was lost to injury. Losing a player of his size and upside is never ideal come playoff time, but the Spitfires should have the depth to absorb it.

 

Guelph Storm

The Storm arrive as the seventh seed after narrowly missing out on sixth place in the Western Conference by just two points, a reminder of just how fine the margins are at the bottom of the playoff picture. They may be the lower seed, but Guelph is a franchise with its eyes firmly set on the future, having been awarded the 2027 Memorial Cup hosting duties. For this group, a meaningful playoff run would be a significant step in building toward that moment.

Leading the way offensively is Tyler Hopkins, who wasted no time making himself at home in Guelph and tops the club in scoring. Alongside him, overage veteran Ethan Miedema brings experience and urgency to the lineup. Recently suiting up for his 300th career game, he knows this postseason run carries extra meaning as one of his last opportunities in the OHL. 

The Storm’s young core is also worth keeping an eye on. Rookie standout Jaakko Wycisk and Illia Shybinskyi bring skill and energy up front, while goaltender Zachary Jovanovski will be counted on to give Guelph a chance to compete against a Windsor offence that can light the lamp in a hurry. 

 

 

Windsor enters this series as clear favourites, and the ghosts of last year’s reverse sweep only add to their motivation. The Spitfires have the goaltending, the scoring depth, the blue line play, and the home ice advantage to make a deep playoff run, and this group looks determined not to let history repeat itself.

But Guelph is not without weapons. If the home ice trend from the regular season holds, the Storm could make things very interesting when the series shifts to the Sleeman Centre. Hopkins, Miedema, and a hungry young core give the Storm enough firepower to be dangerous on any given night.
