OHL Friday Night Faceoff: Sault Ste. Marie at Flint
Friday Night Faceoff heads to the Dort Financial Center this week as the Flint Firebirds host the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in a key Western Conference matchup. With both teams positioned in the playoff race, Friday’s meeting carries added importance as the regular season enters its final stretch. Flint enters the night leading the West Division and sitting second in the Western Conference, five points back of Kitchener for the conference lead. The Firebirds hold a two-point edge over Windsor in the battle for the division title.
New York Rangers prospect Nathan Aspinall continues to drive the Flint offence, sitting second in OHL scoring with 30 goals and 86 points. Trade deadline acquisitions Kevin He and Jacob Battaglia have added further depth to the lineup. He ranks second on the team with 35 goals and 70 points, while Battaglia has contributed 26 goals since joining the Firebirds.
Los Angeles Kings prospect Jimmy Lombardi has also played a major role in the Flint attack, recording 33 goals and 66 points this season.
In goal, Mason Vaccari has provided steady play for Flint throughout the year. His 33 wins rank second in the OHL, while his 2.65 goals-against average sits ninth among league goaltenders.
The Greyhounds arrive in fourth place in the Western Conference, nine points behind Flint and one point ahead of London as the race for home ice advantage in the first round continues.
Overage forward Marco Mignosa leads the Soo offence with 31 goals and 80 points, continuing a strong season for the Tampa Bay Lightning prospect. Trade acquisition Jeremy Martin has also provided a scoring boost since joining the Greyhounds. Martin has recorded 26 goals on the year and produced eight goals in nine games during the month of February. Friday’s game marks a return to Flint for the former Firebirds forward.
On the blue line, NHL Draft prospect Chase Reid is nearing a return to the lineup. Reid has recorded 18 goals and 47 points this season and is regarded as one of the top defencemen available in the 2026 NHL Draft.
In goal, Los Angeles Kings prospect Carter George has handled the majority of the workload for the Greyhounds. George carries a 2.71 goals-against average and a .910 save percentage, both ranking among the top marks in the OHL this season.
With Flint looking to strengthen its hold on the West Division and the Greyhounds battling for playoff positioning, Friday’s matchup sets up another important test for both clubs.
