Friday Highlights: Tippett taking over
MISSISSAUGA 6 – KITCHENER 2
Florida Panthers prospect Owen Tippett (16, 17) stretched his string of consecutive multi-point appearances to seven games, giving himself 10 points over the last three contests with two goals and two assists in a 6-2 Mississauga Steelheads road win in Kitchener. The Trout climbed out to a 4-0 lead in the first period as Nicolas Hague (21), Keean Washkurak (5) and Michael Little (5) joined Tippett on the scoresheet. Cameron Gaylor (3) would also find the back of the net and draft eligible goaltender Jacob Ingham made 40 saves as the Steelheads won their third straight game. The Rangers took the shooting column 42-35 in the loss, seeing a five-game winning streak come to an end. Nick McHugh (6) and Greg Meireles (11) were goal-scorers as Kitchener fell to 25-12-2-0. Suddenly surging in the Central, the Steelheads improved to 17-22-0-1.

SAULT STE. MARIE 3 – OSHAWA 2 – OT
Fresh off a 23-game winning streak, the Soo Greyhounds look as though they’d like to start another one. Rasmus Sandin set up New York Rangers prospect Tim Gettinger (20) for the power play game winner two minutes into overtime as the Hounds edged the Oshawa Generals 3-2 on the road. Goaltenders Matthew Villalta and Kyle Keyser traded saves in a fast-paced, back-and-forth contest that saw both clubs register 30 shots on goal. Hayden Verbeek (13) and Joe Carroll (5) provided other Sault Ste. Marie goals while Domenico Commisso (12) and Nico Gross (4) helped earn the Gens a single point in the OT loss. Greyhounds forward Morgan Frost pushed his current point streak to 16 games with an assist in the win. Oshawa sees its six-game winning streak come to an end as the Generals now sit at 19-17-3-0, one point back of second place Kingston in the East Division.

SAGINAW 4 – ERIE 3 – OT
The Saginaw Spirit scored three times in the third period before Erie’s Ivan Lodnia (18) sent things to overtime where Marcus Crawford (11) won it for the Spirit 3:29 into the extra frame. Crawford took a pass from Cole Coskey that he deposited past Erie’s Anand Oberoi to give the Spirit a 4-3 win over the visiting Otters, improving to 13-7-1-0 at home this season. Detroit Red Wings prospect Brady Gilmour (8, 9) scored goals 1:03 apart early in the third before Max Grondin (5) tallied just over three minutes later to make the score 3-2 Saginaw. Erie goals came from Ryan Martin (1) and Kyle Maksimovich (22) as the Otters earned a point in the OT loss. Saginaw’s fourth straight win sees them improve to 21-13-3-0 while Erie drops to 12-20-6-1.

NORTH BAY 3 – HAMILTON 2
Matthew Struthers’ (10) first goal as a member of the North Bay Battalion stood as the game winner as the Troops leaned on a 30-save performance from Julian Sime to defeat the Hamilton Bulldogs 3-2 on the road. Kyle Potts (7) and Andy Baker (8) helped North Bay take a 2-0 lead before Hamilton’s Jack Hanley (1) found the back of the net. Struthers scored to make it 3-1 with 2:55 left in the second before Nicholas Caamano (18) pulled the Bulldogs back within one at 8:27 of the third. The Battalion keep pace with Mississauga in the Central Division, improving to 14-19-5-1 while Hamilton remains atop the East Division with a 24-9-3-3 record.

WINDSOR 4 – KINGSTON 3
The Windsor Spitfires squared off against former stars Gabriel Vilardi and Sean Day in Kingston, overcoming a 3-1 deficit with three goals inside the opening five minutes of the third period to take a 4-3 road win. Curtis Douglas (11) scored in the first period before Jake Smith (9), Daniel D’Amico (4) and former Frontenac Cody Morgan (5) all scored in a span of 4:04 early in the third. Lucas Patton made 29 saves in goal for the Spitfires as they were outshot 32-24. Linus Nyman (15, 16) scored twice for Kingston while Ryan Cranford (12) also lit the lamp. The Frontenacs won 40 of 56 faceoffs in the game with newcomer Cliff Pu going 18-for-20. Vilardi registered a pair of assists in his Frontenacs debut as Kingston fell to 18-13-3-3 after a third straight loss. The Spitfires have won back-to-back road games and are now 21-13-2-1.

GUELPH 4 – OWEN SOUND 1
Detroit Red Wings prospect Givani Smith (7, 8) scored twice while overage forward James McEwan (10) had a goal and two assists as the Guelph Storm defeated the visiting Owen Sound Attack 4-1. Anthony Popovich stopped 42 of the 43 shots he faced as the Storm prevailed despite being outshot 43-27. Dallas Stars draftee Liam Hawel had three assists on the night and went 10-for-13 in the faceoff circle while blueliner Dmitri Samorukov (6) finished with a goal and an assist. Rookie forward Daylon Groulx (6) provided the lone goal for the Attack as they dropped their seventh straight decision, falling to 14-16-1-5. Guelph climbs a full seven points ahead of Owen Sound in the Midwest Division standings, improving to 19-15-1-3.

LONDON 5 – SUDBURY 1
The London Knights kept rolling in Sudbury as Evan Bouchard (14, 15) and Liam Foudy (5, 6) both scored twice while Sam Miletic (14) had a goal and two assists in a 5-1 road win. Tyler Rollo had two assists while Jordan Kooy stopped 22 of 23 to win his fourth straight start as the Knights outshot the Wolves 36-24. David Levin (6) scored Sudbury’s only goal in the loss as they fall to 11-22-5-0 in the Central Division. The Knights are within five points of first place Kitchener in the Midwest Division, sporting a 22-14-2-1 record with wins in six of their last seven.

SARNIA 7 – FLINT 1
The Sarnia Sting snapped out of a five-game slump in a big way, overwhelming the Flint Firebirds 7-1 on home ice as Sean Josling (13, 14) and Franco Sproviero (4, 5) both had two goals and an assist. The Sting climbed out to a 2-0 lead in the first period before putting things out of reach with a four-goal third. Jordan Ernst (20), Ryan McGregor (10) and Hugo Leufvenius (16) also scored as Sarnia netted a pair of shorthanded markers in front of a 39-save performance from Justin Fazio. Rookie defencemen Colton Kammerer recorded a pair of assists as Sarnia improved to 26-12-2-0. Rookie forward Jack Wismer (3) provided Flint’s lone tally as the Firebirds dropped their third straight decision, falling to 11-23-3-0.
