67’s name Luca Pinelli 20th captain in franchise history
The Ottawa 67’s have a captain for the first time in five years, announcing today that forward Luca Pinelli will become the 20th player in franchise history to wear the ‘C’ on his chest.
“Luca sets our culture, on and off the ice,” said Head Coach Dave Cameron. “He’s smart, mature, and displays tremendous work ethic. We are excited to have him lead our team, this season.”
Forwards Brady Stonehouse, and Will Gerrior will serve as alternate captains, alongside defencemen Matthew Mayich, and Thomas Sirman.
Pinelli, 18, is coming off of a season in which he helped the 67’s to a first-place finish, setting franchise records for wins, and points. The Stoney Creek, Ontario native suited up in 67 games, scoring 29 goals and 34 assists, for 63 points, earning an invite to the 2023 Kubota CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game. Pinelli finished the postseason as the 67’s leading scorer, with 18 points in 11 games.
For his efforts, Pinelli was selected in the fourth round, 114th overall, by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft.
“I’m really grateful for the opportunity to be named captain of such a storied organization,” Pinelli said. “It’s an honour, especially with the great group of guys that we have here. I’m looking forward to getting started on this season.”
Ottawa selected Pinelli with their second round, 28th overall pick in the 2021 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection. His rookie season saw him score 14 goals and 22 assists, for 36 points in 59 games, and notching four points in as many playoff games.
"I'm just grateful to be captain of this team, this organization. Obviously it's a big honour, and I'm excited to get started with the guys. I know we've got a special group."
