Gilhula Scores Shoot-Out Winner as Wolves Win Over Sting
The Sudbury Wolves wrapped up a two game road swing in Sarnia at the Progressive Auto Sales Arena Saturday night. The pack took home a huge 4-3 win after the shootout hero Owen Gilhula was the lone goal scorer in the shootout. Final shots on goal were 36-26 in favour of Sarnia. It was a big night for Cole Candella who earned first star of the game. Candella tied the game early in the first period at 1 and shocked the Sting’s fans by tying the game up at 3 with 33.9 seconds remaining in the game.
Macauley Carson also scored while Peter Stratis, Anthont Tabak, Shane Bulitka, and Darian Pilon all earned assists.
In a fast-paced first period the Sting capitalized early and took a 1-0 lead when Brayden Guy scored his fifth of the season 1 minute and 44 seconds into the opening frame. Cole Candella quickly responded not a minute later tying the game at one. Tabak and Stratis earned assists. Macauley Carson fought hard and gave the Wolves a 2-1 advantage to end the period after picking up his own rebound and backhanded it in past Aidan Hughes.
Over halfway through the second period Alexandre Hogue tied the game at two. He recorded his first goal of the year on the man advantage. The Wolves were sent on the penalty kill with little time left in the period following an awkward bump from Zack Malik. Sarnia with the man advantage resulted in a wrist-shot goal from Hugo Leufvenius that gave the Sting a 3-2 lead with shots on goal 23-16 in favour of the Sting.
A physical third period had David Levin sent flying following a big hit from Hatcher. Evenly matched, either team was unable to produce a goal until the final minute of the game. The Wolves regrouped after killing a penalty for two many men on the ice and made the comeback. Cole Candella on fire, lit the lamp for the second time of the night but with 33.9 seconds left in the game to tie it at 3.
For the second time this weekend, the game was sent to a shootout after both teams had a tough battle in 3-on-3 overtime. Owen Gilhula being the Wolves’ second shooter was the lone goal scorer in the shootout sealing the deal 4-3.
The Wolves will look to build momentum off of tonight’s shootout win on Thursday when they take on the Ottawa 67’s on home ice at 7:05pm.
