SmartStop Post-Game Recap – Triumph over Wolves
MISSISSAUGA, ON – Luke Misa’s record setting performance helped the Mississauga Steelheads hold off a fierce challenge from the Sudbury Wolves, securing a 4-3 victory on Sunday evening.
Gabriel Chiarot’s game winning goal, combined with Lucas Karimis’s impressive two-goal display, were instrumental in the Steelheads’ (30-21-6-0) triumph. Chas Sharpe also added a goal, and he and Porter Martone both collected their 100th career points.. Ryerson Leenders was stellar, making 26 saves. With his two assists, Luke Misa set the Steelheads’ franchise record for assists in a season.
The Sudbury Wolves (33-17-3-3) fell short despite scoring three power play goals with the help of their top scorer, David Goyette. Dalibor Dvorsky and Nick DeAngelis also scored in the game. Marcus Vandenberg made 26 saves in the effort.
With less than three minutes left in the first period, the Wolves seized the lead as Goyette delivered a masterful assist to Dvorsky. Positioned perfectly at the right side of the net, Dvorsky capitalized the power play opportunity, netting the game’s opening goal and setting the score at 1-0.
Early in the second period, the Wolves capitalized on another power play opportunity as Goyette and Dvorsky replicated their earlier success. Dvorsky’s assist to Goyette extended their lead to 2-0.
Moments later, the Steelheads responded with a stunning play. Misa, with a skillful flick of the puck, found Karmiris who deftly beat Vandenberg, getting the Steelheads on the board.
The Steelheads continued their momentum at 7:27 when Martone slid the puck towards Sharpe who fired past Vandenberg, tying the game at two.
Refusing to be outdone, the Wolves reclaimed their lead with another power play success. Goyette, showcasing his playmaking prowess, set up DeAngelis who skillfully beat Leenders, pushing the Wolves ahead.
With less than 30 seconds left in the second period, Misa broke the single-season assist record with his pivotal pass to Karmiris, who netted his second goal of the game and brought the score level at 3-3, ensuring the game remained tightly contested.
In the decisive moment of the game, the Steelheads capitalized on a prime scoring chance to take the lead at 12:01 of the third period. Stevie Leskovar’s shot on goal fell to Chiarot, who didn’t miss the opportunity to score what would become the game-winning goal, securing a thrilling victory for the Steelheads.
