SmartStop Post-Game Recap – Major Problems
SUDBURY, ON – The Mississauga Steelheads allow four power play goals and lose 5-3 to the Sudbury Wolves in game four of their first round playoff series.
Three of the goals came on one prolonged 5 on 3 power play, after the Steelheads took two straight major penalties.
Angus MacDonell, Finn Harding, and Adam Zidlicky had goals for the Trout in the effort. Jack Ivankovic made 40 saves.
Matthew Mania had the game winner for Sudbury, while Evan Konyen, David Goyette, Landon McCallum, and Nick Yearwood scored as well. Jakub Vondras made 25 saves in the win.
The Steelheads scored first early for the second straight game. MacDonell crashed the net on the power play and banged a rebound past Vondras and in to make it 1-0 for Mississauga.
The Wolves equalized with less than two minutes remaining in the period. Konyen slid a rebound around Ivankovic and in on the power play for his third of the postseason.
Harding’s tap in from in front capped off a pretty tic-tac-toe play just over one minute into the 2nd period, as he buried Porter Martone’s pass into the yawning cage.
The Steelheads back to back major penalties came just 14 seconds apart, eight minutes into the second period.
Goyette scored just seven seconds into the 5 on 3 advantage, banging in a back door pass to tie the game.
McCallum made it 3-2 Wolves two minutes later when he fired in a one timer from the circle. Ivankovic was inches from saving the puck after an incredible effort, but it had just crossed the line before hitting his stick.
Mania capped off the successful Wolves power play with a point blast with just two seconds remaining in the 5 on 3.
The Trout got one back with five minutes remaining in the second period, when Harding’s point shot squeaked through Vondras and Zidlicky banged it in from the crease.
The Wolves took a two goal lead once again before the period was over when Yearwood fired his own rebound past Ivankovic and in to make it 5-3.
