BARRIE, ON – The Mississauga Steelheads finally win in overtime as they come back from 3-1 down to beat the Barrie Colts 4-3 at Sadlon Arena on Thursday night.
Lucas Karmiris scored the first Steelheads (33-21-7) overtime winner of the season to win the game. Angus MacDonell opened the scoring for Mississauga, while Kieran Witkowski and Finn Harding also scored in the comeback. Ryerson Leenders made 22 saves in the win.
The Colts (25-29-4-0) couldn’t hold onto their lead, but gained a point on Peterborough in the race for the eighth and final Eastern Conference playoff spot. Bode Stewart scored two goals in the effort, and Beau Jelsma added his 31st of the year as well. Ben West was outstanding, making 43 saves.
A neutral zone turnover helped Barrie open the scoring at 10:32 of the first period. Kyle Morey won the puck and found Stewart, who buried the chance past Leenders. The play was reviewed for a potential offside, but the goal stood.
Jelsma stole the puck killing a Steelhead five on three power play to start the second and wired a shot into the top corner to make it 2-0 off the breakaway chance.
The Trout cut their deficit in half a few minutes later when MacDonell made a sharp play from behind the net, corralling the loose puck and banking it off West’s pad and in.
Halfway through the third period, Stewart found a loose puck at the side of the net and maneuvered around Leenders to tuck the puck into the opposite side of the net to make it 3-1 Barrie.
Witkowski started the Steelheads comeback with a power play goal at 13:30 of the third period, capitalizing on a sweet feed from Dean Loukus.
The Trout tied the game with three minutes remaining. Harding found the puck off a deflection and snapped a shot past West to send the Trout to overtime.
Karmiris’ overtime winner came on a well placed wrist shot that beat West on his glove side.
